It was kind of a strange place to be playing a gig. Well, Plymouth Pavilions is a great place to play a gig…but with random ambulances and police cars and a little basketball game and such going on, it was a strange place to be playing a gig. Yup, it was Connexions day at Pavilions, and everyone’s two favourite Saltash punk bands were the entertainment. (So was the Weapons of Sound junk band and an R’n’B type band, but the less said about them the better!)
Spiltmilk (one word!) came to the stage first. They looked a bit bemused, since they’re all so small and the stage was so big. But they carried on doing what they were supposed to be doing all the same. They began with Faces, then moved onto my very favourite of all Spiltmilk songs, Material World, which they did really well. Midway through the set, Stevie announced they were going to play a song that they’d only written the day before so, “I apologise in advance!” They played Spiltmilk Is One Word for the first time ever before an audience, and I reckon after a few more practices, it’ll be a great song.
Then, Loggerhead took over. Loggerhead have always been a great band to watch visually, as well to listen to (and I don’t mean because they are all good looking, I mean because they are always so enthusiastic and dance all round the stage!) and today was no exception. They played kind of spontaneously, what with the lack of set list and all, but it was still a good performance. And everyone’s favourite song, Ideal for Open Fires, was played, so no one was disappointed.
I have to admit, it wasn’t the best I’ve ever seen either of them play, but in all fairness, there were far too many technical hitches, and there was a crowd of about ten people, who weren’t really very encouraging, and many of whom you couldn’t really imagine at a punk gig at all. So I’m looking forward to the next of both their gigs, so I can enjoy these two great bands the way I usually do.
