Description :
Attitude Check:
Kohaku is more or less a blank slate. He displays no emotions in his voice, actions, or eyes. He simply appears to have none, even when given an order from Naraku. Though there are a few times when he is set 'free' from Naraku's control, this is the only times he appears to even close to his old self.
'Normally' Kohaku is a quiet, shy, kind, and quite the loving little brother towards his elder sister Sango. He is a good kid, wanting to live up to his father’s expectations and make people happy and he doesn't want to disappoint. Indeed, this seems to be a major thing for Kohaku, he doesn't like to upset people or make them sad or even see them unhappy.
The other Kohaku, the one Naraku has made by using a jewel shard and wiping Kohaku's memory is little more than an emotionless minion. This Kohaku does what he is ordered when he is ordered to do it with no questions asked and no emotions displayed. It is as if the order is all he lives and would die to accomplish. Oddly enough though a small bit of his old self does show through. When faced with his sister, Kohaku is slower to follow commands, even disobeying them indirectly when it comes to attacking Sango.
Mirror:
Kohaku stands roughly 4ft 9in in height. He is slim, being of the acrobatic type, and lacking large muscle due to his young age. He is of a thin build giving him the edge when it comes to speed and dexterity, not to mention a mind-trick since most would underestimate him in a fight. This slight build comes at a price though, Kohaku doesn't have the large muscles so his weakness lies in the fact he cannot over-power most opponents. He must rely in dodging, evading, or turning the brute force back on the attacker.
Kohaku has black hair and matching eyes, though they usually seem quite lifeless. His skin is fairly pail though it is obvious he could use some more time in the sun. He lacks any scars or defining features that might mark him, he is quite 'ordinary' to look at.
Overall, Kohaku wears rather odd clothes. He wears the garb of the Demon Hunter, complete with mask. The clothes are black in color with reinforced tan colored plates at his shoulders, knees, stomach, and groin, ...protecting the vital areas of any hunter.
Around his waist is tied the sash of his family, a defining color that separate him from other Hunters. Finally, over his mouth and nose is worn a sort of filter that cleans the air before the Hunter breaths it, filtering out any toxins or poisons that might be in the air.
Return to the Past :
Kohaku started out in the village of the Demon Slayers with his father and sister, Sango. He was the youngest slayer in the village and though he had trained since he was first able to he was uncertain of his abilities. Still, despite his thoughts, Kohaku's father brought the young boy along on a special demon hunt, to 'break the ice' and get him started as a hunter.
During the course of the battle though something went horribly wrong. A demon, by the name of Naraku, at the lord castle where the Hunters were to kill a spider demon, attached a small spider to Kohaku and used him to kill the other Hunters. One by one all the Hunters fell to Kohaku, slain by the young boy and his Kusarigama. The small boy who was so uncertain of his abilities was suddenly and quite violently killing off every hunter as they stood around the fallen spider demon.
Kohaku, when the slaying was over, came to his senses and realized what he had done. He had wounded his sister, quite badly, and had destroyed the other slayers. Of the 'most powerful' group of Hunters only the two siblings were left alive. Of course, this soon changed. The lord of the manor ordered Kohaku to be killed, so the archers shot him down with arrows. When Sango tried to interfere she too was shot down for trying to save and help her little brother.
Though the Hunters were buried in a corner grader on the manor, Kohaku was far from being put to rest. Though Sango was led to believe everyone was dead, Kohaku had had a shard of the Shikon jewel put into his back and was re-animated with it to become Naraku's minion. The boy’s memory was wiped clean of his actions that night, his slaughter of the Hunters, and he was left as little more than a puppet of Naraku's.
He was now a ‘faithful’ follower of Naraku, a puppet that could be given his life and yet have it taken away again at the whim of the demon Naraku. As a trap, laid out to defeat the InuYasha crew, which Sango joined, Naraku gave Kohaku back his life and let him wander. He began to work for an elderly couple by cutting wood and so earned himself a home. Shortly after this InuYasha and the rest came along and found the boy. It was during this time that they found he had no memory, no recollection of his life or even his name. His mind was literally a blank slate. All he had was his skills in using his Kusarigama and his learned balance and fighting skills, which he displayed in cutting the wood; putting on a show for the elderly couple.
When Sango and the rest found him, Kohaku didn’t know them, he didn’t even realize whom he was until Sango told him. When night came so too did the demons. Naraku wanted his minion back, and was putting out quite the show of force. This was merely a diversion though, Naraku wanted Kagome gone and InuYasha out of the way and if to do this he had to use the boy, then so be it. Kohaku attacked Kagome and then retreated to Naraku’s castle on the back of a demon. Sango was given a challenge, to bring InuYasha’s sword or never see Kohaku again. She did steal the sword but the end result was a battle between Kohaku and Sango, boiling down more so to Kohaku’s non-stop attacks and Sango merely taking them. When InuYasha, Kagome, Shippou, and Miroku arrived at the castle though the fight had drawn to a close; Sango and Kohaku stood side by side, with Naraku generating a miasma to destroy them all. A sacred arrow from Kagome is truly what ended the battle though, sending Naraku and his castle away.
