Explore early:

In the beginning of the game, use your overlord to explore.  If you can, try to find your opponents.  If you happen to find Protoss, you can stay there for a while since they don't have anything that can attack air that early.  But keep in mind that if you're playing against more than one race, their allies can send guys that can attack air.

Get defense early:

Tired of losing just because your opponent sent a few guys to attack you?  Well try building sunken colonies early.  Build a lot of sunken colonies along with some spore colonies during the beginning of the game and your opponent wont be able to get pass your defense.  Right after you get a spawning pool, start getting sunken colonies fast.

Better defense:

For better defense try getting Lurkers in front of your sunken colonies.  If you opponent sends a lot of ground units, they'll be ripped to pieces by your lurkers.
