First impression: hmm… I’ve heard many good things about this book, perhaps those people are right yes? And the cover is nice and simple, kind of makes me curious.
Story: Amazon.Com says:
Stargirl. From the day she arrives at quiet Mica High in a burst of color and sound, the hallways hum with the murmur of “Stargirl, Stargirl.” She captures Leo Borlock’s heart with just one smile. She sparks a school-spirit revolution with just one cheer. The students of Mica High are enchanted. At first. Then they turn on her. Stargirl is suddenly shunned for everything that makes her different, and Leo, panicked and desperate with love, urges her to become the very thing that can destroy her: normal. In this celebration of nonconformity, Newbery Medalist Jerry Spinelli weaves a tense, emotional tale about the perils of popularity and the thrill and inspiration of first love.
My thoughts: Ooh, special. NOT. The “celebration of nonconformity” is absolutely pathetic. Unless, of course, you’re one of those who is all “oooh, conformity is the devil! It is the key to damnation!” I mean, to be honest, the actual writing was pretty good in some parts. I’ll give you that, Mr. Spinelli. But the idea behind it—of how *bad* conformity is—is very overused and, to be honest, tired. Let’s be creative, shall we? To be completely honest, I liked about five pages of the book. The rest just irked the hell out of me, and was a basic pain. Another typical groupie who thinks they’re so unique for saying “nay, conformity!” Ahh.. that’s one of my pet peeves >_>. If you like stories with overused morals and super-exaggerated characters, then this is a good book for you. But if you’re fed up with such crap, put that money back into your pocket and buy something good. :D.
The verdict: I would rather rip out my tongue and use it as a blindfold than read this book again. Strangely, some other people feel quite different about this book, but then many people are still blinded by how “glorious” the “awe-inspiring **non-conformity**” (cue fancy music and lights) is. And if you happen not to be blinded by such, and still enjoyed this book, then you are truly amazing for finding something good in something so horrible. My applause to you. Feel free to argue with me, if you’d like. :D
