EELS
Irving Plaza, NYC: March 23, 2002
Okay, so I saw eels about 7 months ago, but I've just gotten around to writing about it now. Luckily, I've got my handy journal to help me. Sooo.... here it goes. An amazing concert, and a very fun day, too.
My friends and I were in the city for the day before the concert. First, we got on the 6 train (a subway) to go somewhere, and were greeted by "Bingo Charlie" and "Bingo Carl", who gave us bingo cards, informing us that this was the bingo car. There were signs up all over the car saying things like "Bingo 4 Life" and "The 6 train knows how to party bingo-style". It was awesome, believe me.
So then we went to the venue around 4:00, to see what time the concert was scheduled to end. Unfortunately, the box office was closed, so we began to depart, when we suddenly passed a strange looking figure on the sidewalk. He was wearing a pink wool hat with a pom-pom on top and looked suspiciously like E, the main person in eels. I turned to my friend Emma and said, "Is that E?" and she said, "I think it is!". So we asked him if he was E, and he said that he was. It was very exciting. We talked to him briefly and got autographs (he signed my Souljacker, as you can see here). We, in fact, found out when the show would end from E himself. It was really really awesome.
So the doors opened at 8. We got in line at 6:30, and were the third party in line, which sort of amazed me. It was really cold, so we bought a blanket, and attempted to make a candle out of starbursts and a tampon string. We met some really cool people on line. Good times were had by all. We eventually got inside, and were *right* up against the stage, right underneath E. It was fantastic. I had my hands resting on the stage the entire concert. Very cool indeed.
The opening act was wonderful. It was a mime!! He was dressed all in silver, and all he did was stand there for about 15 or 20 minutes, but the creepy thing was that he didn't blink once, for that entire time. He was fabulous.
All I have to say about the actual concert was.....it rocked. It was probably *the* most rocking concert I've ever been to. Perhaps even the best. I still, 7 months later, can't get over the vibe of that concert. It was beautiful, moving, and amazing. Ahhh! My favourite was probably Not Ready Yet, which went on for a long time. At the end of the concert, I managed to get the setlist! It was very exciting, and I've scanned it here. If you don't feel like clicking, here it is below:
