[05/16/01] it's as if Moses came into my room

Although I didn't want to, my mom decided it was time to start cleaning up my room and rearranging the closet. Long story made short: I have much more free space in my room, and things are more organized. But I need to go through the old crap and decide what's necessary. I have a tendency to keep old things because, well, they're old. It's from a much different time in my life. It's memorabilia. Or something to that extent.

Oh, I just found a gem while looking through a folder. It's a very short essay I wrote in sunday school -- I laughed. And I'm kinda embarassed to post it, but here it goes:

Why Am I A Muslim?

I am a muslim because Islam is a way of life. Guidance is provided by Allah, the Creator of the Universe. Islam tells us the purpose of human beings and things people do in their lifetime. Islam makes us pure and helps us to be good. Islam tests us during our lifetime. If we do good things, we will go to Heaven. if we do bad things, we will go to Hell.

We follow the words of Allah in the Qu'ran. The Qu'ran is one of the most scientific books int he world. Everything in the Qu'ran can be proven because the Qu'ran has said some things that have all ready happened. If you took a Qu'ran from now and one of the first ones, the arabic would be exactly the same. Also, prophet Muhammad (pbuh) could not read or write, which is another reason it is real. No human could ever right
[write] like that, because of the poetry in the Qu'ran.

Comments: Excellent! and You are doing very well. Please keep it up!

I feel bad for deceiving the teacher. I don't think I was totally sincere about what I was writing. I just wrote what I'd heard. However, the words hold more truth nowadays (but I'm nothing close to religious). Whether Muhammad (pbuh) was illerate, I don't know if that's true, but it doesn't hold much significance. And other stuff. But I'm not in any mood to get into this further (no, it has nothing to do with trying to disprove the Qu'ran or anything stupid like that (but hadiths aren't to be trusted completely)).

Wanna know something strange? My handwriting is exactly the same since I wrote this essay, at the least. No difference I can see. I have this style of switching between cursive and print within the same word. And then there's a mesh of the two at some letter. It's legible though. I think someday I'll scan my homework from senior (maybe even junior) year. You'll be amazed at 1) the amount of scrap paper I've used and 2) the ways in which I utilized all available space to me, no matter how much I had to write given a smaller than normal writing area. Some teachers griped, others bore the eye strain, and still others prohibited me from such acts of recycling. For some reason, I didn't like wasting paper on homework. Half sheets and quarter sheets carried me a long way (coincedentally, I only chew quarter sticks of winterfresh. quarter sticks serve their purpose for me. a whole stick is just a complete waste).

Mythology is interesting. I'm almost finished with the first part of "Bulfinch's Mythology." It's a collection of different stories that cover (from the cover): The Age of Fable, The Age of Chivalry, and Legends of Charlemagne. I need to look into much earlier mythology though. stuff. Epic of Gilgamesh. And things around that time.

I was browsing through some music theory sites at work today, and I kinda felt like it wasn't worth it for me to really pursue composing seriously. I doubt I'd be able to ever come up with something memorable. It just takes a lot of dedication that I couldn't really put in, along with some musical genius (none in my brain). So I should stop setting the goal too high for me.

Well...I'd like to write more, but I should sleep.
