[05/17/01] if only myths were real...

I'm getting sucked into reading more and more mythology and folklore. I'd rather do that than work at the moment. Sigh.

Today I was acquainted with some Hindu and Scandinavian myths. Did you know Ygdrasill (the tree that grew from the body of the first frost giant Ymir) supported the whole universe? And that Loki is an asshole? He's not even a god, if I read correctly. He's just a giant that somehow managed to live with the other gods, even though he did a lot to screw them over at some point.

Anyway, I came across a great site today: The Encyclopedia Mythica. It has a lot of stories on there. I'm hooked on the Arabian Nights stories. They're the shortened versions, but I remembered that I bought a book that contains all the stories in Bangladesh several years ago, so I'll end up reading that later this summer, after I finish my mythology book and Grimm's fairytales. That's all I'll end up reading this summer most likely, since I don't read fast and I still have around 2000 pages of reading ahead of me. But it's all fun reading.

I spilled a cup full of water at work this morning. I had my cup set behind the computer a bit. And I was trying to get the cabinet above me open, but the computer was blocking it a bit, so I tried moving it around. The cords knocked over the cup, so I spent a good 10 minutes cleaning things up. Luckily, nothing was ruined or damaged.

Philip Glass is a neat composer. I'm getting hooked on more of his stuff. I've heard two or three songs of his collaboration with Ravi Shankar, and they're good.

Hehe...today they showed an episode of The Simpsons when they built a swimming pool one summer. And there was a clip of Krusty back in the day, when he said something like "And now here's Ravi Shankar will perform another long raga", but Ravi was annoyed that Krusty pronounced his last name wrong and corrected him. Krusty got it wrong again and added "whatever. Groovy man." I don't know why I never caught that little scene before...anyway, I thought it was funny. You had to see it.

My poor brother is a bit overworked with school. He was falling asleep trying to memorize some Spanish lines for a project. I offered to make some coffee. So I made a cup of vanilla nut and gave him half. He liked it. He's cool.

My mom hasn't touched a computer in her life until recently. Now she's playing solitaire and hearts, and going online to some hindi sites to listen to songs. She even sent me an email once a few weeks back. She'll probably have a website up within a year.

I didn't realize that losing 3 hours in bed each day would make me so tired...or maybe it's all in my head. Being at home and working is different than being on campus. The days seem a bit longer, I guess. And now it's time to sleep. Or read.
