About the XY-Zone
The XY-Zone (the entire collaboration is known as The East Austin Male Involvement Project)
is engaging teen males in the effort to prevent teen pregnancy by developing
responsibility, creating community awareness, providing health information, and
serving as an outlet for developing positive relationships with parents, peers,
adult mentors, and partners.
The project is based at Johnston High School and reaches
out to the male youth of East Austin through a collaboration of community-based
agencies, including Communities In Schools,
Lifeworks, People’s Community
Clinic, and Big Brothers Big Sisters. These
agencies have teamed up to contribute the best of their unique services to this
new and exciting male involvement project.
Collectively, the agencies facilitate group discussions around issues
associated with adolescent pregnancy and provide participants with job readiness
services, health information and screenings, support groups, mentors, community
service projects, and peer education.
Participation in the XY-Zone is an opportunity for young
men to promote healthy development by improving skills and options, bolstering
self-esteem, promoting a sense of hope in their future, as well as providing
opportunities for growth and achievement.
The Texas Department of Health and the
US Department of
Health and Human Services have provided funding and support for this project.
The East Austin Coalition serves as the project’s governing board.
Please contact the XY-Zone via email if you have any questions or would like more information about the project, or call or write:
