Author's note: This story is an insert between YnM Gensoukai Arc Part 64 and Part 65.
This is the 23456 Counter Hit Gift Story for Ling. Request was for either Hisoka x Souryuu or a Watari story. I know. I should have done Watari.

The Waters Within
YnM Fanfiction by Yen

Why won't you help me? Father...
Is it because I've been a bad boy?

Father... Mother... don't leave me.

I'm afraid... of dying...

Kouchin rushed to Hisoka, catching by him the shoulders before his head hit the ground. "Hisoka-kun," she whispered urgently, shaking him gently, trying to wake him up. When he didn't respond, her eyes darted to Souryuu with barely controlled anger.

"Souryuu-sama," she said; her tone, frostily respectful, "I beg permission to leave your presence."

"Granted..." His human avatar form shimmering, Souryuu fluidly changed back into his dragon form. As he reared his long graceful neck, he said, "I thank you for your healing music."

"You're welcome," Kouchin said shortly and gestured at her biwa to come to her. As it slid to a stop beside her, she moved Hisoka to it. Souryuu stopped her.

"Leave him."

"Souryuu-sama!" Kouchin cried, standing in protest. "He has gone through enough already. There is no need for further punishment."

"No punishment has been meted."
"Surely, you must have felt his pain."
"His past mortal life is of no concern."

"I'm not leaving him alone with you," Kouchin declared stubbornly, then she shrieked in alarm when a globe of water suddenly surrounded her. Before she could free herself, the globe warped out of cavern, bringing Kouchin along with it.

Even as the echoes of Kouchin's angry screams had barely died out, a second globe, this time filled with air, formed around Hisoka and floated him closer to Souryuu, who examined him with minute attention. Moments later, liquid oxygen began filling the air bubble.

Hisoka began choking when his mouth and nostrils were covered. He came back to consciousness just in time to see Souryuu diving back into the underground lake and dragging him along into its depths.

As currents of water surged wildly around the seemingly fragile bubble, a fearful Hisoka struggled to stand in the rising liquid.

"Souryuu!" Hisoka shouted, desperate hands flattening on the inner curve of the bubble. "W-what are you going to do with me?"

His fear and despair increased when Souryuu didn't answer him. Through countless bubbles streaming by, Hisoka could barely see the Blue Dragon ahead of him.

"Souryuu!" The liquid was reaching up to his throat. "Please..." Hisoka began pounding the bubble wall. "Please... forgive me..." His knees weakened, his legs began to fail. His trembling jaw dipped into the cold liquid.

"I'm sorry..."

As the boy behind fell again into stupor, Souryuu slowed and turned to make certain he breathed still. The liquid oxygen would keep him alive in these depths, but only if the boy's body took the life giving liquid in.

He wasn't breathing. Souryuu shifted back into his human form and entered the globe to kneel beside the prone form lying on its bottom. Calmly, he reached out his hands to turn the boy over on his back, then he flattened his palms against the boy's still chest and pushed, forcing Hisoka's lungs to contract further. When his chest didn't expand to fill in its empty lungs, Souryuu leaned over and covered Hisoka's mouth with his own.

As this life passes between us, let me see your dreams...

***

You are nothing!

Hisoka huddled on the cold cellar floor, trying to warm himself. His trembling arms around his small body gave little comfort, but there was nothing he could do to ease the coldness deep inside him.

Father... Mother... why do you have to hate me so much...

His eyes were closed tight shut, holding back tears. Crying only made it worse. They treated him more horribly when they find out he had been crying. He didn't want to give them more reason to hate him and to treat him badly.

Something bright flashed against his eyelids, and he opened them slowly to see that the first morning rays were filtering through the only window in his cell. It was small, barely big enough for him to fit through. Though that didn't matter, for the window had bars and was located too high up the wall for him to reach.

Despite his hopeless situation, Hisoka smiled, lifting his face to catch the sunlight on his face. For the next few hours, he would follow around and stay in the patch of warm light in his cell until the sun couldn't shine into his cell. It was one of the very few things he looked forward to.

Suddenly, the light vanished, and Hisoka stumbled to his feet, craning his neck to see what little sky he could see through the small window. The sky looked gray and cloudy, and a sob tore from Hisoka.

He hated these days the most; when it rained.

***

Hisoka shivered, shaking badly as another gust of cold wind entered into the cellar. He wished he could close the window, which had let in the sun for only such a short moment today.

He pressed his back against the wall, his arms around his knees against his chest. He was facing the open side of his cell with its thick horizontal and vertical wooden bars crossing each other and keeping him imprisoned. He wondered, praying someone would come down to see him today. When it rained, someone would usually come to place a stool in his cell for him to sit on. Once, a long time ago, a kind servant had even come to get him and let him stay in his room until the rain stop. Hisoka never saw that servant again.

Outside, it began to drizzle. Hisoka could hear drops of water hitting the ground. Again, another breeze wafted inside, and this time, it brought bits of rain with it. Minutes passed, it rained harder outside, and still no one came down to the cellar. Hisoka heard it then; the slow steady dripping of rainwater entering the cellar through the windows.

***

Hisoka's feet were wet, and he sniffled, wiping at his nose with the back of his hand before climbing up the wooden bars again. It was the only way he could get his feet off the flooded cellar floor. It had been raining for only a quarter hour, and the water was already high enough to cover his ankles.

He let go again and landed awkwardly in the water, causing some of it to splash high and to drench the lower part of his clothes. He couldn't hold on well to the thick wooden bars.

Please... please, somebody help me.

Hisoka choked down his helplessness and once again clambered onto the wooden bars. Barely had his right foot touched a hold when it suddenly cramped, causing Hisoka to lose his balance. He fell, landing hard on his back in the freezing water.

... It was hopeless... Hisoka stared at the ceiling, barely feeling the icy water around him. He was drenched. Why... why is it this way...

Slowly, unwillingly, he let a tear fall. It wouldn't matter if he cried or not. He was so wet, they wouldn't know the streaks on his face had been made by tears.

Why doesn't somebody help me... why... ... I hate his world.

***

I hate this world.

Souryuu lets himself loose from Hisoka's dreams, and his eyes opened to see that Hisoka was crying silently. His eyes were shut, trembling as tears welled then rose in tiny shimmering spheres through the liquid oxygen. Without thought, Souryuu reached out and captured some of them in his hand. Then he pressed his palm against his mouth to taste the tears. They were salty as tears were. Then, his eyes flickered.

... Even his water hates.

Author's note: The closest that I can get to a Souryuu x Hisoka story that has a hint of yaoi in it. I can probably continue this, but I have to be convinced first that this pairing is possible. And you're probably wondering why Souryuu dragged Hisoka into the lake. Well... it did make it more dramatic, but the main reason is that water is Souryuu's domain, and that if he ever plans to punish Hisoka or something else, it would probably be done underwater.
