Chapter 4 Main Ideas

 Reading with comprehension uses Vocabulary + Comprehension skill

 Three level of comprehension skills.

Literal    Understanding what the author actually wrote.
Inferential         “read between the lines” put and ideas together to draw conclusions and make generalizations.
Critical     Judgement - questioning, comparing and evaluating.

      Finding main ideas

A Topic sentence would be stated main idea often found :

·        First sentence in a paragraph

·        First supporting details end with main idea.

·        Some detail, Main idea, and more detail

·        All the Information equally important

Some paragraphs do not directly state – infer

    How to find the main ideas.

·        What is the topic of the paragraph?

·        What aspect of the topic is the author discussing?

·        What main idea does the author want you to know about the topic in relation to the aspect being discussed?
