History

Momoe Yamaguchi was a Jpop idol who created music from 1973 to 1980. During her 8 year carrer, she released 22 albums, 33 singles, starred in 9 serial dramas and 17 full length films.

She was born January 17th, 1959 in Tokyo, Japan. She lived with her younger sister and single mother in a small apartment near a navy base. With aspirations of being a singer, she entered into the talent search TV show, Star Tanjo!. Though she only came in 3rd place, studios saw talent in her, and she was offered contracts. She signed with Sony.

During the filming of her second film at the age of 14, Izu no Odariko, she met her future main leading actor and husband Miura Tomokazu. In total they starred in 14 movies together, usually every winter and summer.

For 8 years of her teen life, Momoe stuck through the constant release of music and movies, and all the publicity that went with such releases. But in October of 1979, Momoe and Miura, who were then dating, were visiting Hawaii and Miura proposed marriage to Momoe. And (of course) she accepted. They had a press confrence shortly after to announce their wedding, and Momoe's plan to retire after she had married. After the release of her last album "This is my Trial", in September of 1980, she formally retired from show business. On November 19th, her and Miuna were married, and in December her last film "Koto" was shown. Since then, she has raised her two sons and became a regular housewife.

The '70s is considered the "golden age" of Jpop. Some of her classics include Imitation Gold, Cosmos (Kosumosu), Playback Part 2 and Ii hi Tabidachi. Since imitation is the highest form of flattery, Momoe must be extremely complimented, as all of these songs have been covered by some of the biggest names in Jpop. From her following '80s idol, Akina Nakamori, to current idol Hikaru Utada, the Hello! Project did a song for their "Sotsugyo" Folk songs compailation, and even rock bands GO! GO! 7188 and Inugami Circus-dan. Her songs have lasted through out the years and her through that, old fans have stayed true, and younger fans have discovered her. her longevity is one of the ways she can truly be considered a Jpop legend.
