Title???? Err... none yet...
Sora gasped and covered her eyes moaning, “Ewwww! Gross!” Beside her, Tai chuckled under his breath. He casually slid his arm around her shoulders. Sora shrugged them off, and focused on the movie again. It was one of those gross and gory yet intriguing action movies. The hero was currently trying to save the heroine from the evil character. He had just practically massacred the evil man’s henchmen.
“I can’t believe you talked me into this,” Sora whispered under her breath. Tai grinned again and whispered back, “I knew you’d like it.” For some reason, Sora was uncomfortable tonight. She had a nagging feeling she shouldn’t be here, with Tai. Matt never made me feel like this, Sora thought, he always made me feel comfortable. Sora sat for a few more minutes, not concentrating on the movie. The situation was becoming increasingly uncomfortable. Sora leaned over and whispered in Tai’s ear, “I have to use the bathroom.”
Tai had gone too far this time. Just before she had excused herself, he had slid his arm over her shoulders again. Sora was shaking and fuming at the same time as she marched down the hall to the bathroom. Her purse bounced on her hip every time she took an angry yet fearful stride. Sora enclosed herself in a stall and drew out her cell phone.
As she listened to the ringing, Sora felt like she was near tears. “Yello,” came the answer to the phone. “Oh, Matt!” Sora sighed in relief. She bit her lip, not knowing where to start. “Hey Sora, what’s up?” Matt asked. Sora sniffed, trying not to cry. “What’s wrong?” Matt was instantly concerned when he heard Sora trying to fight the tears. “Oh Matt,” Sora felt the first tears slide down her face as she struggled to keep her voice under control. “Matt, I really can’t stay here. Tai is making me feel so uncomfortable. My parents aren’t home tonight, could you come over and pick me up?” Sora’a voice threatened to become incoherent.
“What’s he doing?” Matt demanded. He sat on the beaten couch as he listened worriedly to Sora. “He keeps trying to hold my hand and hug me, an…and I keep telling hi…him off, bu…but he isn’t lis…listening,” Sora was taking in her breaths at deep gulps, trying to keep her composure in case somebody walked in. “OK, just stay there and I’ll be there in fourteen flat, kay?” Matt tried to sound reassuring and funny at the same time. He and Sora knew there was no way her could get there in fourteen minutes, much less flat. Sora attempted a smile, “Thanks Matt, you’re the best.”
Matt was out the door before the conversation was up. He didn’t bother turning off the phone, as it would waste time. He threw it into the passenger seat beside him and buckled his safety belt. He carefully pushed the speed limit, and was extra careful around stoplights and signs when he maxed the limit. It seemed like tonight he was getting all the red lights.
Sora closed the phone and sighed. Matt would make everything right. She washed her face and exited the bathroom to wait for Matt. After she had been sitting in the lounge for a few minutes, she heard footsteps behind her. She stiffened, and turned. “Oh, Tai!” Sora managed. Tai looked at her, “What are you doing?” Sora massaged her stomach, “I threw up in the bathroom. My parents were coming to get me so I decided to wait for them.” Tai didn’t look convinced. “You have to stay here, the movie isn’t even half over yet!” he grabbed her arm. Sora yanked her arm out of his grasp. “Please don’t do that,” she said coldly. Tai grinned.
“What, this?” he yanked her to her feet. Sora felt her arm wrenched out as she was heaved to her feet. “Ow! Tai, stop! You’re hurting me!” Sora cried. She took her other arm and knocked his hand away. She reached out to push Tai away, but he grabbed both her arms. Where is everyone? Sora thought anxiously, Can’t they see I’m in trouble? She pushed at Tai again, but it didn’t affect him and she couldn’t get her arms loose. He pushed her against a wall so hard she heard her head crack on it.
Matt tapped his hand impatiently on the steering wheel. Again he was caught under a red traffic light. His blasting music wasn’t soothing him any. He could see the movie theatre, but it was one stoplight away. As his light turned green, he knew the other one would remain red till the time he got there. “Finally,” he muttered, “A green one!”
Sora kept Tai at bay by pushing out her arms. “Tai! You’re acting like the time Agumon first digivolved to ultimate!” she gasped. “How so?” he asked. “You’re controlling, and harsh, and just radiating anger!” she gasped between reasons. Tai squeezed her shoulder painfully. “I have to disagree,” Tai pushed Sora to the floor. He stood towering over her, grinning wickedly. “Tai, this is not you. Please,” Sora was near tears again. “Hey! Stop!”
Matt ran through the doors of the movie theatre. He expected at least five people to be there. All he saw was one girl and a boy, obviously having a fight. “Hey! Stop!” he yelled when the boy knocked the girl to the floor. He bolted over to them. “Tai,” he growled when he recognized his ‘friend.’ Keeping his eyes on Tai the entire time, Matt crouched to the floor and helped Sora stand. “Sora!” Matt gasped when he looked her over, “Your head is bleeding!” Sora felt the back of her head and brought her fingers in front of her eyes. “Oh, That must have happened when…” Sora closed her eyes and fell against Matt.
“Mark my words Kamiya, I’ll get you for this,” Matt hissed as he carried Sora away from Tai. Matt locked the truck after he put Sora into it. Just in case Tai comes out to try and hurt her again, he thought grimly. He rested her head on his lap and pressured her wound. It wasn’t bad, but it was enough to cause a rage inside of Matt. How dare one of his best friends do this to her?! She would have bruises on he arms soon, unexplainable to her parents. Matt turned on the car and played a soft station, opposed to his hard rock. He let Sora’s head rest on his lap for the while until she awoke.
“Thanks Matt,” Sora whispered, her head still resting on his lap. “He just, I don’t know. He got possessive all of a sudden. I’m really scared Matt,” she said quietly. “Don’t be,” Matt said stroking her hair, “I’m here to protect you.” “Can I stay at your place tonight?” she asked, in the voice of a child scared of the dark. “Sure,” Matt replied. The song on the radio was playing,
“Come stop you’re crying, it’ll be all right.
Just take my hand, hold it tight.
I will protect you from all around you,
I will be here don’t you cry.”
Sora sat up and buckled herself in. She sat in silence gazing out the window the whole ride, her legs drawn up against her chest. Matt helped her out of the car and was going to hold her shoulders when she shied away from his grasp. He didn’t push it, for he knew Tai had treated her roughly there.
“Do you want the bed or sofa?” Matt asked. “I’ll take the sofa, I don’t want to be a bother,” Sora said quietly. “Naw, you can have the bed,” Matt grinned. “Here, take these. They are clean just so you know,” Matt pulled some pajamas off the chair beside him. He tossed them to Sora, who turned and went into the bathroom.
She emerged later to the smell of sandwich meat. “I’m guessing you didn’t have dinner, so I’ll just cook up some of my famous grilled cheese and ham sandwiches!” Matt called from the kitchen. “Sounds great,” Sora hopped into a kitchen chair. “Good, cause they’re ready whether you like ‘em or not,” Matt placed the plate n front of her. She ate it gingerly, but to Matt’s relief, she ate all of it.
“I would change the sheets, but I don’t think we have any clean ones,” Matt said, his voice dying out as he reached the end of his sentence. “That’s OK,” Sora whispered. She climbed into the bed and pulled the sheets up. Matt pulled the blanket over her shoulders, and almost kissed her good night. Then he remembered she would feel uncomfortable. He backed off, and instead went to exit the room. “Matt?” the voice was scarcely a whisper, but Matt heard it. “Could you… could you stay with me?” Matt turned and tried to keep the pain from his face. “Sure,” he sat in a nearby chair. How could his best friend, or anyone, do this?
Matt stayed up long past one, making sure Sora was asleep. He stopped his vigil, and allowed himself to fall asleep. When Sora awoke in the morning, he was there. Sora was deeply touched as she realized he had stayed up half the night for her. She rose, walked over to him, and kissed him lightly on the forehead. His eyes fluttered open and he grinned. “How about breakfast sleeping beauty?” he asked, kissing her cheek. “Thanks, that’d be great.”
