Chapter Three

The Third

“ I’m tired can we go home now,” Joey whined as he sat at his school table, “ Joey dear,” Claire replied with a sweatdrop, “ we just got here, we still have 7 more classes to go.” “ You really are sad you know that,” Kaiba muttered, “ shut up Kaiba.” “ Yeah Kaiba, ya don’t have to be rude,” Tea added. “ Kaiba why do you have to give everyone such a hard time?” Melanie asked, “ because it’s who I am stupid, deal with it,” Kaiba said coldly as he started to read a book. “ You wanna say that again,” Bakura growled as he stood up from his chair, “ Bakura calm down, sit,” Melanie said sweetly yet urging, Bakura slowly sat back down. “ You know,” Claire started to say, “ I bet if we find you a girlfriend, you wouldn’t be so cranky.” Kaiba gave a little laugh, “ don’t hold your breath Claire,” Joey interrupted, “ there is no girl in the world who could put up with this guy’s attitude.” “ For once he’s right,” Kaiba said as he lifted his head to look at the others, “ you are never gonna find the girl for me, she just doesn’t exist.”

Just then someone entered the room, and it wasn’t the teacher. Everyone looked up to see a girl enter the room. She had short ebony black hair pulled back in a dark purple clasp, dark purple eyes, and was wearing the school uniform. “ Wonder who she is,” Yugi muttered to the others, “ probably a new student,” Kaiba said, not even looking at the girl or the others, “ what does she look like?” “ Well if you looked up you see you dolt,” Melanie muttered, Claire and Tea started to snicker. As the girl walked in, you could see and hear a couple of boys were whistling and making noises as if to attract her. “ What a bunch of morons,” the girl said with a cold look and one hand on her hip, the other holding her black briefcase. “

“ Hey there’s a seat over here,” Tea said over to the girl, pointing to the seat in front of Kaiba. The girl smile sweetly as she walked over to the seat, “ thanks, I was afraid I would have to stand.” “ No problem,” Tea started to say, “ I’m Tea, this is my boyfriend Tristan, that’s Claire and Joey, Yugi, Bakura and Melanie.” “ Please to meet you,” the girl replied back, “ who’s he?” she asked looking at Kaiba who face was still reading the book not even looking at the girl. “ Oh,” Tea said with disappointment, “ that’s Kaiba.” Kathy face went a bit red, “ is he always like that?” “ Only to new students,” he said coldly, “ Kaiba,” everyone exclaimed, the girl just laughed, she slowly lifted her hand to the top of the book, slowly moving it down so he would look at her. “ Hey,” he growled, “ I was readin…” he started to say until he looked at her. His eyes widened at the site of her smiling face. “ Hi,” she said as her smile got bigger, “ hel…hello,” he stuttered as he looked her, his face going a bit red.

It was then that the teacher walked, “ all right class settle down.” The girl turned around to the front, “ we have another new student today, this ones from England, can you please come up here?” the teacher asked. The girl slowly stood up and walked to the front of the classroom, “ this is Katherine Zenon, you might know her as the famous teen fashion designer, a lot of her work is in most teen magazines. “ I knew it was her,” Tea said to Melanie and Claire, “ we all knew Tea,” Melanie mentioned, “ how come you didn’t tell us?” Yugi asked, “ didn’t think it was that important,” Claire replied. “ Would you like to tell us about yourself Katherine?” the teacher asked, “ well, first I go by Kathy, I like to work on my designs on my spare time, as well as play duel monsters.” “ Wow, she likes duel monsters too,” Joey muttered. “ Any questions?” the teacher asked, a few people raised their hands. “ Yes,” the teacher said to a girl, “ yeah, when’s your spring line come out?” “Next month,” Kathy said quickly. “ Yes Melanie,” the said as she pointed to Melanie, “ when does your dark girl line come out, they told us it was supposed to be out two weeks ago.” “ That is incorrect, a reporter misquoted me on that one, it comes out in two weeks.” “ Last question,” the teacher said to a boy who hand was raised, but just about he was ask the question, Kathy already answered it, “ no I don’t have a boyfriend.” A lot of boys were happy about that last answer, “ all right Kathy, please take your seat,” the teacher said as she turned to the blackboard.

“ I’m starving,” Joey muttered as he took a huge bit out of his sandwich. “ I know,” Melanie replied as she opened her soda, “ lunch is my favorite class,” Yugi added, making everyone except Kaiba laughed, he gave out a big sigh. “ What’s wrong Kaiba?” Yugi asked, Kaiba didn’t answer. Kaiba was thinking about Kathy, though he didn’t show it, I didn’t think a girl like her existed he thought. “ Hey Kathy sit over here,” they heard someone say, Kaiba jolted his head to see Kathy behind him looking for a place to eat. “ No over here,” someone said. “ No here,” Kathy just looked around as if she was looking for someone. Her eyes then landed at Kaiba and the others; “ hey can I eat with you guys?” “ Not at all,” Melanie replied, “ thanks,” Kathy said as she sat next to Kaiba.

“ So, why do you wanna sit with us?” Joey said, “ Joey Wheeler!” Claire exclaimed as she elbowed him in the ribs, Kathy just laughed, “ no its all right,” Kathy started, “ I decided to sit with you guys is because those people wanted me to sit with them is because I’m a famous designer, not because of who I really am.” “ You guys treated me nicely before you knew I was a designer, and why guys are asking me I don’t know.” “ Because of your good looks,” Kaiba muttered, “ excuse me,” Kathy asked nicely, Kaiba just shook his head, “ nothing.” Tea, Melanie, and Claire looked at each other in puzzlement, “ how do you like the school?” Bakura asked as he took a sip of his soda. “ It’s all right, I guess, I’ve never been to American schools before, so I’m not really sure if this ones the same as the others,” Kathy replied with a bit of a moan. “ Trust me, this school is like heaven compared to the other schools,” Tristan replied.

The bell rang, “ time to go already,” Claire moaned, “ well lets get this over with,” Joey added. “ Yeah,” Kathy said as she picked up her briefcase, “ hey do any of you have History next?” Tea pushed Kaiba toward her, “ Kaiba does,” “ yeah, show her to the class,” Melanie added. Kaiba gave them a nasty glare, “ Kaiba,” he turned his head to see Kathy was talking to him, “ would you please show me to class?” “ Yeah…sure,” he stuttered as they walked toward class. Melanie, Tea, and Claire looked at each other with a devious smile, “ and he said she didn’t exist.”

“ Hey guys wait up,” Yugi and the others said as they caught up with Kathy and Kaiba, “ hey you guys what’s up?” Yugi said happily. “ Not much, except your friend here completely insulted me and therefore proves my thought that men are vulgar creatures. Kaiba shrugged his shoulder and gave Kathy a nasty glare; “ you’re not the only on who was embarrassed Kathy, I had to sit next to you.” Kathy completely ignored him and walked away, “ women,” he muttered, “ we’ll go talk to Kathy,” Tea said as she and the other girls walked over the Kathy. “ What happened Kaiba?” Yugi asked, Kaiba gave a big sigh, “ I unfortunately insulted Kathy during Science class and we’ve been fighting with each other ever since.” “ Well did you mean to?” Bakura asked, “ of course not, I feel bad now,” “ then go over and apologize,” Joey urged. “ Are you nuts I cant do that,” Kaiba replied, Joey face clenched with anger, “ you and your pride.” “ Joey right Kaiba,” Tristan added, “ Kathy wont talk to you until you say sorry and trust me I should know.” “ Maybe I should,” Kaiba muttered.

“ Kathy what happened?” Tea asked as she, Melanie, and Claire walked over to her. Kathy gave a little sniffle as if she was crying, “ that jerk over there insulted my work and now I won’t talk to him,” “ and for good reason,” Melanie said in shock. “ Did he say sorry?’ Claire asked, Kathy gave another sniffle, “ no, that’s what’s bugging me, I thought he liked me.” “ He does,” Tea replied, “ he just has problems showing his emotions, he is your friend, trust me.” “ Yeah,” Melanie added, “ we’ve all had our guy problems trust me.” Kathy gave a big sigh, “ all right.”

“ Kathy,” they heard someone say from behind them, they turned to see Kaiba. “ Can I talk to you?” Kathy gave another sniffle and nodded to the girls as a signal to leave. They were quiet for a bit, “ I’m sorry Kathy,” Kaiba said, “ I didn’t mean to make you upset,” Kathy smiled at him, “ thanks, your forgiven.” “ Dang, Kaiba said sorry and I didn’t even have my camera,” Joey moaned, Kaiba scowled at him, “ shut up.” “ Well, now that that’s over,” Melanie said, “ lets get something to eat at the pizzeria.” “ Yeah,” everyone exclaimed.

“ Kathy lets go the guys are waiting for us,” Melanie said to Kathy as she was putting her papers inside her briefcase. “ All right, all right I’m coming,” she replied, “ come on,” Claire urged,” Kaiba will be there,” Kathy looked up with no expression on her face, she snickered, “ then I might as well not go at all.” It had been at least three weeks since Kathy had come to Domino, and indeed Kaiba and Kathy had patched things up, but they still fought with each other. “ It must be a sign of affection,” Claire said to the others as they watched them at each others throat again.

“ Come on, don’t be stupid,” Tea exclaimed, “ believe it or not you’re the only girl in this state and maybe even in this world that puts up with that man.” They walked out of the school, “ honestly I don’t even know why I put up with him Tea,” Kathy said they turned the corner, “ because you’re friends,” Melanie replied, “ please, friends,” Kathy snickered, “ we act more like we’re dating.” The girls gasped and stared at her, Kathy looked at their expression and started to blush, “ NO, NO, I DIDN’T MEAN IT LIKE THAT!” The girls just laughed as they turned another corner where someone was waiting for them. The girls stared at the man, he was wearing a cape that covered his face, behind him were a two other hooded men.

“ Oh no,” Tea gasped as Claire and Melanie started to growl. “ Malik’s minions,” Claire growled, “ who’s minion’s,” Kathy asked. “ Tea get Kathy out of here,” Melanie growled, “ we’ll take care of them,” Claire added as she and Melanie grabbed the necklaces around there necks. “ What’s going on?” Tea asked as the charms on their necklaces started to glow, which then formed into what looked like were swords. “ Wow,” Kathy muttered, Tea grabbed her by the arm and started to drag her away, “ come on lets go Kathy.”

Kathy and Tea started to run away, “ let’s beat these guys Melanie,” Claire muttered, “ lets.” Claire and Melanie ran toward them with their swords tightly gripped, but as they were about to swing their swords at them, they disappeared. “ Where’d they go?” Melanie said as she looked around. “AH!” they heard someone scream from behind them, they turned to see the henchmen were walking toward Kathy and Tea. Kathy and Tea started to run toward Claire and Melanie but the henchmen were so fast that they blocked their way. “ I don’t understand, why are they after Tea and Kathy?” Claire asked Melanie, “ I don’t know,” Melanie replied, “ but lets not wait to find out.” They charged at the henchmen again, but they disappeared again.

“ Why are they after us?” Tea asked with fear in her voice, “ lets not worry about that now, lets get out of here and find the guys,” Claire demanded. The others nodded yes and started to run, “ you guys wanna tell me what’s going on?” Kathy asked while still running, “ later,” Melanie replied back as they turned a corner. “ We have to find Yugi and the others, they’ll…” Melanie started to say before she heard someone scream from behind them. It was then that they realized that Kathy was gone, they ran past the corner again to see Kathy floating in the air, surrounded by a purple barrier, which the henchmen were controlling.

“ Kathy!” they said in unison, one of the henchmen looked at them and sent a deadly attack at them. “ AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!” they screamed as they were about to be engulfed in the light. But another flash went toward the henchmen’s attack, overpowering it before it hit the girls; they turned to see it was Yami and the others. “ Yami,” Tea with joy, “ are you guys all right?” Joey asked as they ran over toward them. “ Yeah,” Claire with relief, “ where’s Kathy?” Kaiba exclaimed, “ up there,” Melanie replied as she pointed to the floating Kathy. “ KATHY!” Kaiba yelled, it was then that Kathy slowly lifted her head. Her eyes had lost their shine as if looking into pure darkness and on her head was a purple mark. “ The third sign,” Melanie gasped, “ what?” Kaiba growled, “ that’s why they weren’t after us, they were after Kathy,” Melanie started say, “ she’s the third protector!” “ NO!” Kaiba exclaimed

“ How do we get her down?” Yami asked Melanie. “ I can deal with that,” Claire said with confidence, “ leave it to me.” “ How are you gonna get her down?” Joey asked her, “ You forget my ability,” Claire said with a wicked smile as she lifted her hands (had bells on them), “ I’m an illusionist.” Claire started to shake her hands, which played the bells, sending a reddish glitter at Kathy. With a flash, instead of Kathy being in the air, Claire was floating in the barrier, and Kathy was on the ground. “ Claire,” Joey gasped, “ Kaiba,” Kathy said, “ when the henchmen break the barrier, make sure you catch Claire.” “ Right,” Kaiba nodded, the henchmen then looked up to see they had the wrong girl. They then started to walk over to Kathy, breaking the barrier around Claire. “ Gotcha,” Kaiba muttered as he caught Claire. The henchmen were getting closer; Kathy had a wicked smile cross her face.

“ Idiot’s,” she muttered as she ran the bells on her hands, which then revealed Claire was standing there and Kathy in Kaiba’s arms. “ What just happened?” Joey exclaimed, Claire closed her eyes and smiled with pride, “ my illusionist powers made it look like they captured the wrong girl, so even though I looked like Kathy, it was really me, and even though Kathy looked like me, it was really her.” “ How confusing,” Tristan moaned. “ Yami,” Claire exclaimed, “ send those guys to the shadow realm before they capture Kathy again,” “ right,” Yami nodded. His millennium puzzle started to glow violently as he sent a huge flash at the henchmen, sending them to the shadow realm.

“ That was close,” Tea said as she gave out a big breath, “ yeah, I was afraid we were goners,” Tristan added. “ Is Kathy gonna be all right?” Kaiba asked as he walked over to Claire and Melanie, “ yeah, she’ll be fine, she just needs some rest,” Melanie said with confidence. “ We can take her to my place to rest,” Kaiba replied, “ kay,” the others replied.

“ NO!” Malik screamed, “ HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?” he screeched. “ Now Yami has the three protectors and will be sure to find Umi before I do,” he growled, but then his eyes widened and a wicked smile crossed his face, “ or maybe, I could change that…”

“ How is she?” Kaiba asked as Melanie put her hand on Kathy’s forehead, “ she’ll be fine.” “ Good, she’s gonna need rest before we tell her about how she’s protector,” Claire replied, “ don’t bother,” they heard someone moan, it was Kathy slowly lifting herself from the couch, “ Kathy,” Tea gasped. She slowly lifted her eyes to look at them, “ I know everything, I’ve known for awhile,” “ you have,” Melanie stuttered with shock, Kathy nodded her head, “ well at least that I had a special gift, not that I’m some sort of a “protector” as you call it.” “ What gift?” Joey asked, “ the gift of ESP,” Melanie answered. Kathy nodded again, “ I’ve had it since I was born, I just hide it from everyone so I could live a normal life.”

“ Well, I guess that means we don’t have to solve a lot of questions,” Yami said, “ but there is still one left,” Kathy replied, “ where is our pharaoh Umi and how do we find her?” “ We’ll I do know that we are united, we have to wait for when Umi will send us her message,” Melanie replied, “ what message?” Claire asked, “ don’t know, but we have to wait till she appears to us.” “ Do we have any idea of when that will be?” Tea asked, the girls just nodded their head. “ Then what good is this?” Kaiba asked, “ she might as well have shown herself in the first place.” “ That’s the thing Kaiba, she cant,” Melanie replied, “ huh?” Yami asked, “ her soul is trapped within a millennium item right? But unlike you and Bakura’s, hers in not allowed to be unlocked until she is reunited with the man she loved.”

“ What, we have to find her soul mate too?” Joey exclaimed, “ now your bargaining for more then you said.” “ Sit down Joey,” Claire said as she tugged him by the his shirt pulling him back down to the couch, “ he wont be hard to find,” Melanie said confidence, “ we already know who it is.” “ Who?” Yami asked, Melanie crossed her arms, “ not allowed to tell.” “ Okay…” Kaiba said, “ but we still should be careful, the Malik might send more minions for you three.” They all nodded, “ don’t worry,” Kathy said as she stood up, “ we will find the pharaoh, and we defeat Malik, and nothing will stop us.” “ Right!” Everyone exclaimed with joy. Kathy looked out the window we will.
