27: Kaiba Falls! Invincible Toon World
Yugi tells the others that Pegasus's Millennium Eye somehow lets Pegasus see
all the cards in Kaiba's hand. Mai's skeptical, but Joey wonders how anyone
can win against that kind of power. Yugi says not to count Kaiba out just
yet—he may be behind now, but he didn't get to be world champion without
learning a few tricks.
Kaiba's skeptical, too. He doesn't know what's going on, but is determined to trust his old skills. But he doesn't have anything in his hand that can stand against the powered up Dark Rabbit, so he plays another monster in defense and ends his turn.
Pegasus asks Kaiba if he liked watching cartoons in his youth. (In the Japanese, he says "manga," or comic books.) Kaiba doesn't want to play this game, and just glares at Pegasus, who goes on to rhapsodize about his favorite cartoon rabbit, Funny Bunny (Funny Rabbit). Angrily, Kaiba tells Pegasus to just make his move, and Pegasus says that is his move—and he plays the magic card Toon World. (As usual, the title "Toon World" is removed from the book in the US version.)
Joey says he's never heard of this card. Yugi thinks it sounds familiar—and then they realize that Pegasus's Dark Rabbit has disappeared. Pegasus tells Kaiba that his Dark Rabbit has gone to live in his new home, and as long as he's inside Toon World, he's safe from attack. But first, he sends the cartoonized Dark Rabbit to attack Kaiba's defense monster, Battle Ox, destroying it. Then Dark Rabbit retreats into Toon World's pages.
Kaiba can't attack, so he plays a card face-down. Then Pegasus plays the Blue Eyes White Dragon, turning it into the Blue Eyes Toon Dragon, a cuddly little cartoon dragon. Kaiba's furious at what Pegasus has done to his pride and joy, but the little dragon is just as powerful as its original counterpart, and easily destroys Kaiba's Rude Kaiser.
Kaiba lays down his hand, saying that if Pegasus can see his cards, he'll abandon them. Joey says now that Kaiba's not even looking at his cards, he has to trust more in the heart of the cards, and Mai's pretty impressed by Joey's insight.
Kaiba draws a card and plays it without looking at it—it's the Blue Eyes White Dragon! Now Kaiba has a monster to match Pegasus's, and he attacks the Blue Eyes Toon Dragon with his own. Normally, Yugi says, this would end in a draw, but he doesn't know all the rules to Toon World. But it turns out that the Toon Dragon easily evades attack, and Pegasus once again talks about Funny Bunny, saying the cuddliest creatures never get hit. Toon World protects his creatures, he says. The others ask Yugi about Toon World, and he says the card was never put into circulation, because it was too powerful. Pegasus must have the only one.
Pegasus can no longer look through Kaiba's mind at his hand, but he has another plan. A duelist of Kaiba's caliber has surely memorized his entire deck, so he simply reads Kaiba's mind to find out what cards he has. Then, Pegasus plays the Shine Palace, a card that raises the Toon Dragon's attack by 500 points. The little dragon's biceps pump up and explode like volcanoes! (It's at this point that my DVD of the Japanese episode ends, so I can't do any more comparisons except for a bit at the end that shows up in a flashback in a later episode.) It attacks Kaiba's Blue Eyes, but Kaiba activates his trap card, Negate Attack, stopping the Toon Dragon's attack.
Kaiba knows this is his last chance to save his brother, and he draws a magic card, Shadow Spell, which stops the Toon Dragon from attacking and lowers its attack by 700 points. Now he is able to destroy the Toon Dragon with his Blue Eyes White Dragon.
He's finally taken a bite out of Pegasus's life points, and destroyed his best monster. But Pegasus comes right back with the Dragon Capture Jar, a monster that captures dragons, and uses their defense points as its own. Kaiba's Blue Eyes is sealed in the jar.
Now Kaiba sets a monster in defense. Pegasus plays a card face down, and plays the Dragon Piper, planning to use it to take control of the Blue Eyes White Dragon.
Kaiba summons Swordstalker and attacks the Dragon Piper, but Pegasus plays his face-down card, Doppelganger, which can copy any card on the field. He uses it to copy the Crush Card (wait a minute, the Crush Card isn't on the field, it's in the graveyard) and uses the Dragon Piper to activate it. Kaiba's Swordstalker is infected by the virus, and so are the rest of the cards in his deck. Now he can't summon any monsters with an attack over 1500 points. Kaiba plays Monster Reborn to revive Saggi the Dark Clown—the only monster he has with an attack less than 1500, but he knows it won't be good enough. He tells Mokuba that he tried his best.
Pegasus summons Bickuribox (Devil Box) and attacks Kaiba's monster. Kaiba closes his eyes, telling Mokuba he's sorry, as Bickuribox destroys his monster, and he loses the duel. (In the Japanese, Kaiba says "Goodbye, Mokuba. Goodby, Yugi.")
Pegasus uses his Millennium Eye to trap Kaiba's soul in a soul card (Mind Card in the Japanese). Now he has both of the brothers' souls in his possession. Kaiba's empty shell is led away, and Yugi weeps for him. Yugi shouts a challenge to Pegasus, telling him he won't let him get away with it. Then Yami comes out to renew Yugi's challenge. Pegasus senses that Yugi's tapping into the power of his Millennium item, and welcomes the arrival of the spirit of the puzzle. He tells Yugi he looks forward to watching him and the other finalists duel, but he's confident that his Millennium Eye will lead him to victory.
