How to Draw Madoshi Clef (kawaii!!)

This little magician may be small in stature, but drawing him is no small task. So go grab your Jolt Cola and let's have at it. I apologize for the crappy scans in this lesson--my scanner is having a midlife crisis.

La la la...general face guidelines, you know the drill. This is another front view, so do yo' thang.

Let's give Clef some cheeks to pinch, ne? Start up at the eye line, come down (keeping the lines pretty straight, not too curved) to the mouth line. Angle in a little more, and meet at the chin. Clef's chin can be either rounded or kinda pointy, depending on the angle you see him from. Me, I like his chin rounded.

Notice there's no ear on this figure...save the ear for later on this one. There's a lot of stuff you have to do first.

Man your battle stations, men (and ladies now too, I guess...^_^)! We're drawing eyes. And not just any eyes. CLAMP eyes [insert creepy violin music and terrified scream here]. So what are we waiting for, let's get started! In this case, I would advise doing both eyes at once. They have to be pretty close to symmetrical, and it's just easier than doing one and then copying it. Start with the BEGINNING of the top line, going from the inside out. It begins a little below the eye guideline, goes up, then starts smoothing out until it's almost horizontal before curving out a little past the oval. Whoa, that's one long eye line.

Let's take this slow. Next, we have to make those massive eyelashes! Start at the same place you started for the upper line, this time staying below it and drawing a curve. There's no exact point where the curve turns back inward, you just have to figure it out yourself. But when it does curve back, it does so pretty sharply and back down to below the eye guideline. Now draw a line to connect the upper line (where it ends outside the face) to the end of that inside curve.

Eyeball time. They're circles here, with the tops hidden behind the upper eye part. Make TONS of hilites. Mainly a big one to one side on the top (you might even erase the outline of the circle where it meets that big hilite. Go check out some pics of Clef and see what I mean). Now, that other big curve there at the bottom? Draw that too. It'll be filled in, sort of.

Pretty simple lower eye line. It's parallel to the upper chunk, and be sure to add some little eyelashes.

Eyebrows and nose next. Clef's eyebrows are pretty thick, and pretty straight. They kind of point out like Mr. Spock eyebrows.

Nose next...start at the vertical centerline about even with where the upper eye part starts. Draw a straight line down, curve it out to the left, then back in. Draw a little line to the left of that, following the curve part. Tada, Clef's nose.

How could Clef be the magician he is without a mouth to cast spells and yell at Umi? It's just a little wiggly line there at the mouth guideline. Nothing too special or too difficult. The lower line is a little curve downward a pretty good ways below the mouth. This is more of a chin line than a lower lip line.

Let's do that funny headgear next. This consists mainly of one big horn in the middle (an oval 'cause it's being seen from the front), its gold part at the bottom, two little jewels to one side, and the band part. You get the idea. Yeah, it looks funny now. Hell, it looks funny when it's drawn by the actual artists!

Now we draw the little dangly things. They're just long triangles with little circles at the bottom. Start them at the eye guideline.

Now we finally add the ears! Since they go behind the little hanging things, we needed to wait. They're...well, ears. With little earrings. Don't forget those. The ears fall...you guessed it...between the eye and mouth guidelines.

Whoa...kinda looks like Miboshi on Fushigi Yuugi. Blech, we can't have that. Let's add Clef's nifty hair! Do the bangs on the left first. They're just curvy zigzags. Now stop there, about at the ear, and go up by that horn thing by the oval guideline. Draw zigzags down to meet the ones you just drew. They get longer the lower you go, as a rule of thumb. For the right side, start at the ear and draw littler zigzags up and out, until you're parallel with the horn. Then draw a line from the horn to the zigzags. Add a few little lines at the headband and near the horn to give the impression of how the hair flows.

And now the finishing touches! Clef wears a sort of turtleneck looking thing under that big hood. Speaking of the hood, it's REALLY big! It goes way out there to the sides. The jewels in this thing aren't perfect, in fact there should be much more detail in Clef's robes. But since I have lots more tutorials to write, you get to figure that one out of your own ^_^.
