47' WOODEN CUTTER - 'YANISKA'

 
sailDescription:  Aft cockpit, cutter rigged, fin keel with skeg mounted rudder. Yaniska will stand on the fin keel.

Dimensions: L.O.A. 47' (14.3 m), Beam 14'2" (4.3 m), Draft 7'6" (2.3 m).

Designer:   Guy Thompson of Burnham on Crouch.

Builders:  Hull by Othman bin Jusoh at Mersing, Johore, West Malaysia. Completion by Kim Hiap Huat of Kallang Basin, Singapore in 1977.

Construction:  Traditional carvel in Chengal (Balanocarpus heimii (King)) timber, Chengal is very strong and of the oak family, not exported and used for ships and piles. The planking is fastened to the frames with 2.5" (63 mm) No 14 silicon bronze screws. ASA 316 SS keel bolts.

Engine:  Volvo MD2040 driving 18 x 12  2-blade propeller through Acquadrive CV bearing and thrust bearing, 127 hrs @ Nov 01.

Tankage: Diesel - 2 x 60 gallon (267 litres), of heavy galvanised iron construction. Removed, cleaned and painted in 1994.

Water:  1X90 gallon (410 litres) under aft cabin, 2 x 30 gallon (134 litres) under saloon berths, Stainless steel. Capacity is estimated and established by experience.

shoreElectrics: 12V. 2X130Ah. batteries in series for ship's supply. 1X90Ah. for engine starting. 55 amp alternator on main engine. 1kW.Robin petrol generator in box on deck. 40 amp switch mode shore power system. Ampair 50 wind/water generator.

Mast/Sails: The mast is stepped on the keelson and earthed to the iron keel.  Designed and built by Sparlight with Spencer rigging. New wire rigging supplied by Spencer and fitted 1998. Swages at the upper ends and Norseman terminals at lower ends. Stacpac main by Lucas, spare roachless main. Profurl gear on jib stay with Elvström genoa, also furling no. 2 jib. Genoa staysail and working staysail. Storm jib sets on staysail halyard. these by Lucas. Gennaker from Australia with snuffer.

ACCOMMODATION: from fwd 

1. Large sail locker 

2.  Forecabin with 2 berths 6'3"X2'6" (1.91mX0.76m) wide, solid teak trim, stowage below, 3 drawers at head of each berth, bookshelves and lockers above each berth. Steps to hatch.

3.  Between forecabin and saloon. Port side toilet room with Lavac head, washhand basin with stowage above. Starboard side hanging space and linen shelves.

4. Saloon. Mast at forward bulkhead. Port side, L shaped settee 6'2"X2'2" (1.85mX0.66m) sleeping length around gimballed solid teak table with folding wings, angled seat backs with lockers behind, sliding teak louvres with shelves behind, sideboard with glassware and bottle stowage, tape player, Brass Taylor diesel heater.

Starboard side, settee berth, 5'10"X2'2" (1.77mX0.66m) with lockers and louvres as port side. matching sideboard with 2 x approx 3 ft3 ice boxes with 12 cm insulation. One icebox with holding plate to Thermocool engine driven compressor. (Inoperative 1999) Step up to galley area. Step contains tools.

30 gallon SS water tank under each berth. 

3. Port side. Galley with Taylor 030 kerosene 2 burner plus oven cooker. (Note only use premium paraffin), crockery and pans stowage behind, twin basins with drainage racks above 

Starboard side. Behind sliding door with cassette racks. Washroom with washhandbasin, stowage cupboards and racks. Fuel tanks and engine under this area.

4. Aft cabin. Port side. Berth 6'5"X2'2" (1.95mX0.66m), stowage below and batteries 2X130Ah. deep cycling service and 1X90Ah. engine. Bookshelf above. Hanging locker and chart table with chart stowage. Starboard side. Berth 6'5"X2'2" (1.95mX0.66m), stowage below, bookshelf above, Hanging locker.
Approx. 90 gallon (410 litre) SS water tank below cabin sole.

5. Steps up to cockpit. Entry behind steps through to under cockpit where forward bulkhead is racked for 16 long-term stowage boxes.

Heating
Taylor diesel heater in saloon.

Cooking
Taylor 030 two burner and oven kerosene cooker.

Fridge
Thermocool sea water-cooled system but not operating reliably. 2 other fridges, one 240v. Another Engels 12v fridge freezer. New 1998.

Navigation
Sestrel binnacle compass, mini hand bearing compass. Autohelm 6000 autopilot with under cockpit thrust arm drive.

Winches
2 x Lewmar 43 genoa, 2 x Lewmar40 main sheet, 2 x Lewmar 16 staysail sheet, Lewmar 40, 16 and 8 halyard winches. Reefing line winch.

Anchoring
Simpson Lawrence Sea Lion windlass rebuilt by Simpson Lawrence 1998. 80m 11/16th short link galvanised chain. 30 kg Bruce on stemhead. 45lb Danforth, 35lb Buccaneer anchors. Kedge warp and chain.

Boats
6 ft sailing dinghy (1998) on stern davits.

Generator
Robin 1500watt petrol generator in box forward of the mast.

Controls
The traditional wooden wheel steering has one and half turns port to starboard so is quite direct. Whitlock single lever engine controls are on the binnacle.

Mediterranean gear
Cockpit sun shade has been carried in all weathers.  A ladder on a swivel at the stern serves with detachable boards as a passerelle and also as a swimming/rescue ladder.

In the year 2000-2001 there has been much refit work. September 2000 underwater hull burnt off and additional 2.5" silicon bronze screws inserted to re-inforce the floors to frames connection, some re-caulking (pictures available).
A new Volvo 2040 diesel engine was also installed in September 2000 and Acquadrive in May 2001. 250 hours on this unit at the start of 2003.
In May 2001 areas of the marina play had epoxy/acryllic cloth sheathing removed for examination of the wood (10% of area). The area was resheathed with glass mat.
In October 2001 new bronze seacock and sea water filter fitted.
In June 2001 most of the 12 volt wiring was replaced with new plugs and fittings - new conduits being run throughout the yacht.
In October 2001 old teak trim was removed from the coachroof/deck joint replaced over a rubber sealant. A teak cover was made to replace the stainless steel one visible in the aft cabin photo.
September/October 2002 much interior painting and varnishing. Topsides and anti-fouling professionally repainted ready for 2003/4. New Blake bronze toilet seacocks, new cutlass bearing.
