Title: Thank You Author/Artist: MK Pairing: Sawada Shin x Yamaguchi Kumiko Fandom: Gokusen Theme: #25, Fence Disclaimer: I don't own Gokusen, but I just watched drama episode 8 and fell in love all over again. *_* Oh god, it has this kind of affect on me There had been few moments when Shin had looked at Yankumi with a particular kind of dawning, terrible awe. Once, behind the school when he had been unable to believe that a shitty costume like that had worked on anyone. Again, the day after he had returned her cell phone and she hadn't known he now knew she was Yakuza. A third time, when a young boy had run towards her calling out "Mama~!" Yes, the feeling had been gut deep each time, but each time everything had somehow worked out. Yuta, of course, was Nakashima's kid, not Yankumi's, and he and Shin had been able to stay over for one of those excellent dinners before he had officially made his move. The only real problem with Yuta was that he was far too smart, and far too open with his mother. "Mama and I came for a visit! I remembered how to get here!" Nakashima's mouth was slightly open as Shin stood in the doorway in just his sweatpants, doing his best to recover his brain. "Ah please come in." Yuta grinned and pulled his mother inside, toeing off his shoes and saying the requisite words, which Nakashima echoed in a kind of haze. Shin left them in the main room, motioned to Tetsu for tea and gave Kyo a slightly panicked look while running past to find Kumiko. "Eh, Shin?" And of course she just happened to still be in her pyjamas; it was a Sunday, after all. "Nakashima and Yuta are here." "Nakashima?!" Which was how he found himself quickly washed and redressed and sitting across from the mother-son pair and tried desperately to think of a way to explain all this. Of course, visitors didn't answer the door at other people's houses, and visitors certainly didn't walk around shirtless and then- answer the door in the same state. It just didn't happen. "Yamaguchi, you?" Yankumi waved her hands frantically in front of her face. "I can explain! I It's notno, it is, but" "Fujiyama was right! You are dating Shin!" "Eeh?!" Apparently, she had still been stuck on the Yakuza part. Sometimes, it was hard to see how she could be so smart one minute and so completely oblivious the next. "Nakashima-san," he had to step in, "I'm living here and being trained. I'm not welcome at home." Yuta's eyes widened at that. "Shin's parents don't want him?" Shin shook his head. "Not exactly." "So you live with Yamaguchi?" Nakashima was looking at him with the tilt of the head that meant that even if Yankumi was the most physically dangerous of the female-staff-trio, this woman was the most dangerous intellectually. She knew, and she knew more about the situation than Yankumi had figured out about it after living with Shin for at least a month. "Nakashima," Kumiko's voice was suddenly very serious, "Yuta-kun," she added, "I am sorry I have not been entirely truthful. My family is of the Ooedo clan." She bowed her head. "The school cannot know, so" "Of course I won't say a word," Nakashima reached across the table and flicked Yankumi's chin, forcing her to look up, "Who do you think I am?" Shin breathed a little more freely. He had seen her to be a good person in the past, but now it was confirmed. She smiled at him cheekily. "I actually think it's great!" And of course, Yankumi had no idea what her friend was really talking about. They wound up, soon enough, at a park where Yankumi helped Yuta work on his spinning around the bar. Nakashima sat back on the bench with Shin and smiled. "So, how long? Tell me everything." He wasn't a talkative person by nature, but he told her enough of it, and he could see why she was the school nurse. She was an excellent listener, even to someone like him. "Ah, so it's like that." "Like what?" Yuta was panting in front of them and Yankumi only a step behind. "Mama, come look! I can spin!" He tugged Nakashima up from the bench and across the loose sand to the bar and Shin followed a step behind. His small hands grasped onto the bar and he heaved his curled legs up and aroundonce, twice, half another time around the bar before he fell, laughing to the sand. Nakashima grinned and dusted off his face. "That's great, Yuta!" Yuta beamed and made the Victory sign. Shin grinned, making a V with his own fingers and the little boy broke into laughter. They ate icecream and goofed around until the sun began to set. "We'd better get home," Nakashima spoke up, stretching her legs. "Yuta needs dinner." "Can we see Yankumi and Shin again?" Yuta asked. He had picked up small mannerisms from Shin very quickly, and it almost felt like he had a younger brother. "Of course," Yankumi spoke up, ruffling his hair, "Anytime." Yuta dug around in his pockets for a moment before pulling out three candies, giving two to Shin and one to Kumiko. "Please tell Tetsu I said thank you for the tea!" "Ah, obligation for accepting hospitality! Thank you, Yuta!" "Oi, Shin-chan!" Kuma, Uchi and Minami were ambling over, hands deep in pockets and grinning. "Yuta, too!" "And me!" Yankumi stuck her tongue out at them and they laughed. "Let's have dinner out, if it's all of us!" So they did. It was just yakitori, but it was good, and hot, and they laughed a lot. "Ehhh? Kuma has a date tomorrow?!" Kuma looked awkwardly happy. "Well, Yankumi said in love you have to throw a strike, so" Shin raised his eyebrows and gave Yankumi an assessing look, which she completely missed while rubbing Kuma's hair. "A strike, ehhhh?" Uchi elbowed Shin furiously with a goofy grin on his face and Shin scowled, then leaned forward to look at Yuta. "Yuta, these guys are bad examples. Just follow me." Yuta nodded enthusiastically. "Un!" Eventually, they made it home. Shin stretched in the doorway while Yankumi took her shoes off. When she stood up to step onto the slightly raised floor, he pulled her forward and kissed her again. Soft, sweet, a little funny from the yakitori. There was just something about Yankumi that made her better than anyone else could possibly ever be, something that made his stomach jump every time he saw her. "Whwhat was that for?" She asked, and he held back a smirk at the slightly dazed look on her face. "A thank you," he said. "Didn't you say in love you have to throw a strike?" She blinked. "Uh" He kissed her again. "And that?" "That was for goodnight." Again. "Goodnight." ".Goodnight" She might have been oblivious, but he could honestly say she gave excellent advice. Seriously, I must thank Chibi while I think of this. While writing it I asked her to find a million things in various episodes for meWhat Yuta calls Yankumi, what the name of the girl Kuma saved was, what kind of ball Yankumi tells Kuma you have to throw in love, what that food is on a stick I had her running all over the place and then she was even kind enough to continue to beta for me. <3 you, Chibi!
