What
do i like about lee-hom?
This is an interesting question, I
guess. And it's very important to Lee-Hom. I can expect all kinds of reasons as
answer if the question is directed at you. The most common answers I usually
hear are "because Lee-Hom is talented", "his music is great",
"he's handsome!", "he's so cute" and "he's so
cool!" . Well, these are part of my answers too.
Lee-Hom and I share the same interest.
We love music. We enjoy performing on stage and communicate to the world through
music as an international language. Lee-Hom's music is wonderful. What he is
trying to do all the time is to introduce what he had learned during his college
days and the music he had experienced in New York, his beloved hometown which he
described as "the meeting center of various cultures" to the Chinese
pop arena. He has applied classical, jazz, blues etc into pop music, as well as
blended the Western and Eastern culture perfectly, which I perceive as a great
success. It makes Lee-Hom's music comprises a wide variety of style. This is a
rare phenomenon in Chinese pop music arena where a singer, or rather an
artiste is not fixed a style. R&B? Lee-Hom manages it extremely well in his
well-known hit "Revolution". Jazz? You will love "One of These
Days". Rock? Try "Bian Huai" and "Ni Ai Guo Mei You".
Classical? Strings Instrumental? Rap? Broadway? Or typical romantic classics?
There's nothing Lee-Hom can't do! (Suggestion for Lee-Hom: Maybe you can try
Chinese opera, or use fully traditional Chinese instruments in your arrangement!
And also Latin, if I'm not mistaken, Lee-Hom hasn't tried this style!)
After watching Lee-Hom's concert on TV,
I'm no longer interested in watching any other Chinese singer's concert. Because
Lee-Hom is too good! I guess no one would object if I say that Lee-Hom is an
inborn performer. He must have millions of performing cells in his body! He is
able to spur on the atmosphere of the concert, the enthusiasm of his audience.
At the beginning I see him singing and running from one end of the stage to the
other; the next moment he plays the guitar; then the piano; he can dance too;
next he shows his musical ability on the drums-set; finally he performs the
violin. Sometimes he spices up his shows with humorous jokes, funny expressions
and mimicking. His shows are often such wonderful and enjoyable.
I am someone who likes to be different
from the others. Being special is an honour to me. Same goes with things and
people I like. Lee-Hom is definitely my cup of tea because he stands out from
the others. He is one of the most shining stars who catches everyone's
attention. He is undoubtedly talented in music and performance, besides, he is
really special. He is one of the rare 'model student' in pop music arena, may it
be from the point of view of international stage or merely Chinese pop. Why do I
say so? Well, Lee-Hom could actually be a doctor if he had not decided to choose
music as a career. This proves that his academic record must be pretty
outstanding! You can just check the Timeline for Lee-Hom's achievements during
school days - Maths competitions, model student, being the youngest member in an
orchestra etc. They are simply impressive! Lee-Hom's natural endowment is not
restricted to music only, but also language. From Lee-Hom's Journal I feel that
his vocabulary is really wide and he is obviously a learned man. He is very good
at expressing himself, may it be by words or by music. Throughout the 6 years
since he stepped into the Chinese pop arena, we witnessed the improvement of his
Chinese language. From a young A.B.C. who could hardly finish a sentence in
Mandarin, he can now speak fluently as well as write his own lyrics in Chinese!
I'm even more enthralled when he picks up Cantonaise. (And he also knows
French!) Oh my God! He is absolutely one smart cookie.
Take a careful look at all those
Chinese singers and you'll notice a phenomenon. I would say 90% of them have an
English name, also known as Christian name. For example Jay, Jeff, David, Sammi,
Kelly, Cecilia etc. But Lee-Hom who is American-born and whose full name is
Alexander Lee-Hom Wang decided to use Lee-Hom as his English and leave out Alex
(Alexander)! I feel that he is so cool and special. I like him because he is
like me, does not like to be the same as the others. Lee-Hom is not so far away
from us. What I mean we can feel his existence and he acknowledge our importance
too. He does read all emails from fans and
even replies back when he feel that it is necessary. That's wonderful isn't it?
How many artistes do this? This is what meant by the real communication
and interaction. And Lee-Hom's aim in the making of music. Even Wang Mama keeps
in touch with the fans clubs and visits websites created by fans to comprehend
the fans' need, feelings and suggestions. (Thanks for your visit to Lee-Hom's
Planet, Wang Mama. I appreciate it very much!)
Love is something difficult to be explained. All
I know is Lee-Hom is one in a million, once in a lifetime. He's the one and
only. I'm glad that I've
found him. I'll support him and his music forever.
