Description:  The corrupt marketplace of Venice and the aristocratic confines of Belmont fill the Alexander Stage at Harper Joy Theatre with the opening on Thursday, December 8th of Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice. The play runs through the weekend, with performances at 8 PM on December 8th, 9th, and 10th and 2 PM on Sunday, December 11th. Part romantic comedy, part problem play, part revenge tragedy, The Merchant of Venice is not easily categorized, The familiar tale of a romantic expedition and the forfeiture of a pound of flesh shows imperfect human beings at their best and worst, contrasting love and frailty, tolerance and bigotry, generosity and greed. Guest artist Frank Barrie will play the role of Shylock. A veteran of the London stage, Barrie will be familiar to Walla Walla audiences who have seen his one-man shows Playing Shakespeare and Macready! and his Dickens adaptation, An Actor’s Christmas Carol at HJT. Barrie has appeared in four previous productions of Merchant, playing Bassanio, Antonio, and Shylock. He has also directed a one-man play based on Shylock which enjoyed a successful run in New York last year. The cast also features Rebecca Cox and Rohan Flinn as the young lovers Portia and Bassanio, Dru Johnston as the merchant Antonio, and Will Hyman as Launcelot Gobbo, the comic servant. Tickets for The Merchant of Venice will be on sale to the general public starting November 29th. For further information and reservations, contact the HJT box office at 509-527-5180 between 10:00 AM-Noon and 1:00-4:00 PM Monday through Friday.
