NBA Hangtime

With the release of NBA Hangtime, Midway has brought us the first basketball game for the N64. It is an excellent port of the arcade, but lacks anyting to make it stand out above other games. All the graphics in the game, despite being well drawn, are flat, making no attempt to harness the power of the N64. The sound effects and music are good, but nothing spectacular. The announcer is actually better than most sports games, and actually helps the game, as opposed to being just plain irritating, as in Waverace.

The game play is very good, and controls are easy to learn--it takes only a few seconds. Hangtime's arcade heritage shows through very clearly. It is a 2 on 2 game, and the only apparent violation is goal tending (which can be turned off). Players jump to spectacular heights and perform incredible dunks. If you are interested in a serious simulation, this game is not for you. However, if your goal is merely fun, then this game is a serious blast.

Owning a controller pak is a definite plus for this game. In addition to being able to keep your records, you can also create your own character with his own look and attributes. A created player can be improved by winning games or answering trivia questions.

Hangtime breaks no new ground, and there isn't anything original about the concept. If you liked NBA Jam, you will love this game too. It has no real flaws, but it falls short of being anything spectacular.. Just some fast-paced, arcade-style fun.
