Training Tips

Some specifics on how to ride an event of this nature
As this is a RELAY and not a RACE, training should concentrate on a steady pace over approximately one hour.

Training should be done often rather than once or twice a week. Naturally it is harder to maintain a good speed into a head wind, but the fitter you become, the less the wind will affect you.

The other advantage of constant training is that you get the pressure points (tail, feet, hands) used to the task at hand. If it is cold, wear warm clothes. Don't waste unneccessary energy keeping warm, risking hypothermia and cramp.

Use your head, WEAR A HELMET !!! This is compulsory anyway. A reflective vest and/or ankle reflectors are good value at all times.

Don't ride at night without lights, and be VERY careful when riding into the sun at dusk.

On the subject of gears, be careful not to ride too high a gear. Try keeping your cadence at approximately 60 to 90 rpm. If you don't have a cadence meter, use your watch to count or else count 1000, 2000, 3000 and see how much faster you are peddling.

RULE OF THUMB : If your legs hurt but your breathing is OK, your gear is too high. If your legs are OK and youre breathing too hard, then your gear is too low. If you have both, then you need more training.

Don't forget to do stretching exercises before and after your ride, especially quadriceps and hip extensions.
