Vocational Training

Executive Summary

To quote Mr. Mukesh Ambani (Chairman, Reliance Group), ‘Reliance is best described as the face of India in new millennium’. With, latest technologies and facilities, a highly educated staff, and a professional management system, this petrochemical complex at Hazira, surely supplements the above point of view.

In the history of the world, the integration of Reliance from oil in the ground to the textiles is unique. With 18 Plants, $3billion investment the complex plays an important role in production of industrial raw materials.

The complex is served by in house Captive Power Plant (CPP), which supplies the whole complex with power and steam. Other utilities include cooling water treatment and waste disposal treatment.

About half of my training was in the Central Engineering Services (CES). It is responsible for repair and maintenance of the machinery of the complex. Its major sub sections include Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, Power Electronics and Civil.

Through CES Mechanical, I was showed the practical applications of the theoretical knowledge imparted to me at my college. I gained knowledge about aspects like vibration analysis at the Condition Monitoring cell, planning activities at the Planning Section, overhauling and repair activities at the Mechanical Workshop, Drawing And Documentation at the Drawing and Documentation Department, inspection of static equipments at Inspection and Corrosion cell and maintenance of heavy equipments and vehicles at the Fabrication and Heavy equipment cell.

I gained an invaluable opportunity to visit and experience a shutdown at the Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC) plant. I was able to see some of the repair and maintenance activities carried out during this period.

The later half of my training concentrated upon a project done at the Bagging Section of PVC plant. The project was titled as ‘Time study of PVC Bagging’. A number of suggestions were given, some of which were immediately implemented and a few others are presently under review. Through this project, I was able to apply the concepts of Industrial Engineering in practical physical problems.

The guidance given by the staff here, helped me understand ‘What Engineering is, in the true sense’. The experience gained here shall help me throughout my engineering career
