Youth Affairs & Sports,Manipur

The Youth Affairs & Sports Department,Manipur came into existance after it bifurcated from the Education Department on 26th May, 1980. The Directorate Office is lcated at Khuman Lampak Sports Complex, Imphal. It has District Offices in all nine district head quarters and two branch Offices at Jiribam and Kangpokpi Sub-Divisions.Tamenglong Districct and Jiribam Branch Offices are located at rental buldings.

The Director is the Head of Department and is assisted by two Joint Directors, five Deputy Directors and 13 Officers.

The Department implements health hygine and sports promotion programmes among youths, students and players. About 300 Physical Education Teachers are posted at different Junior, High and HIgher Schools to teach Physical Educcation subject in the schools.Another ten Physcial Education Teachers are posted at Bharatiyam Cell to implement Mass Physical Fitness Programme among school going children.

A North East Sports Academy was inaugurated on 2nd SEptember, 2000 which is run under the management of Sports Authority of India. 37 Coaches has trained 534 players in 18 disciplines in the year 2000-2001 only.

The Department has 74 Youth Officers to carry out Social Development and Nation BuIlding programmes among youths. In the year 2000-2001 the Youth Affairs & Sports Ministry of India has awarded National Youth Award to Mr. T. Daniel Vaiphei of SaAdar Hills and Miss K. Memamacha Devi, Youth Worker of Imphal West District in recognition of their commitment in the field of Youth Works. The Department also had selected The Child Welfare Ashram, Jiribam for State Youth AWard, Bean Lahram Youth Centre, Chandel, Voluntarry Organisation, Thoubal and K. Aimson FeRnandes, Chandel District for District Youth Awards for the year 2000-2001.

The Department has collected a sum of Rs. 83,676.00 as revenue for lending out the infrastructures at the Khuman Lampak Sports Complex to individuals and Organisations and as entry fee from visitors in the year 2000-2001.
