What is an operating system?
An operating system is like the manager of the computer. It pulls everything together to allow for an efficient and smooth experience. Some examples of OS are Microsoft's Windows, Apple's Macintosh OS, Linux, and many more. The OS runs application software, such as word programs, spreadsheets, games, etc. It also allows you to interact with the interface, talk to your computer by translating your input data into computer language, and simultaneously operate multiple programs. It sends and receives messages, deciding how much work and memory goes into the operation of each program.
Macs vs. PCs (a.k.a. Mac OS vs. Windows OS)
Windows is by far the most popular operating system today. Almost all PCs come pre-installed with some form of Windows. However, Macs are still widely used today, and each type of operating system has their pros and cons. In general, Mac graphics are superior to Windows. For this reason, Macs are popular in the graphics, multimedia, and creative visual arts sector. Also, Macs are user-friendlier. Installing and upgrading are much easier on Macs. Macs generally last longer, and don't crash as often. When they break, they are generally easier to fix. So, Macs are used often in schools. On the other hand, the Windows interface is better organized. Windows is used more in the world of big companies, especially in finances. Since Microsoft dominates the computer market, there are generally more options for software, games, troubleshooting, and books available for PCs. You also get better deals, because the market is so big and competitive.
