SIDEWALK MOURNER
A boy was walking down the sidewalk,
With a young girl trailing behind,
And then he said,
"I forgot it,"
And his face contorted,
And he began to cry.
As tears slipped down his red cheeks
He groaned out the words again,
And he sat down,
In a collapse.
The girl stood behind him,
And she looked at me
As I got into my car and started it.
Why was she standing behind him
And not beside?
Why did she say nothing
And look at me?
As I drove off noisily,
I checked my mirror,
Trying to see what it was
That he forgot.
