Genital itching, often called jock itch, is most often caused by a fungal infection anywhere on the genitals. It may start as just a small patch of red but advance to serious inflammation. Other intense itching can be caused by scabies or pubic lice. In women genital itching, called pruritis vulvae, can be the first sign of a yeast infection. In both sexes, intense genital itching and pain can be the beginning of herpes simplex type 2.

Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is a viral nerve disease produced by the same virus that causes chicken pox. It almost always results in a rash along a long, thin area of the body, following a nerve, and burning or stabbing pain along with itching.

Dandruff can be accompanied by itching. White flakes falling from the scalp and scalp itching are often signs of seborrheic dermatitis, a common yeast infection that inflames the skin of the scalp.
