This is a western river cooter which, in New Mexico, is only found in Eddy
county.
This is the infamous red eared slider, which is found along the above river
cooter. Western painted turtles, spiny softshell turtles, Rio Grande
leopard frogs, and arid land ribbon snakes have all been found at this small
pond. I believe blotched water snakes would also be found here along
with snapping turtles and mud turtles.
A comparison shot between the above two turtles.
This is the only round-tailed horned lizard I found in Eddy county. They
blend in with their background very well!
I found a few of these guys (Texas banded gecko) around the Sitting Bull
Falls area in washes under rocks.
Texas horned lizards are protected in the state of New Mexico, but they
seemed very common in 2002 for me.
I found a total of 4 box turtles in my back and front yard. I've
found a few out in the field while herping as well.
This is a neonate plains blind snake that I found (and
since have found 3 more) in my house in San Antonio, TX. He was approximately
3 inches long!
