Trans-Pecos
Rat Snake
(Bogertophis subocularis subocularis)
The Trans-Pecos rat snake occurs
throughout the Guadalupe mountains except for the highest elevations in the
southwest corner of Eddy county. Commonly called "suboc", it is not
too common in the area...at least not for me. I have seen one AOR (alive
on road) but could not stop to retrieve it and one very fresh DOR (dead on
road) that was still moving when I came upon it. The one pictured above
is the DOR I have found and it shows a very clean pattern. I expect
most in the area are very pretty snakes. There is another phase, the
"blonde" phase, but it does not occur in Eddy county. Growing up to
a length of 60", but usually around 36"-48", it is a rather slender snake.
Diet includes rodents, lizards, bats, and other things. I included
a picture of my blonde phase suboc.
