About 8 years ago, I lived in Hawaii with my mother, Angela. I have watched her fulfill her dream. At 33 years of age, in better shape than some younger women, she suits up and dives into the ocean, rain or shine, unafraid. The ocean is her home, there she feels alive, and happy. As my mother walks towards the beach, carrying her long board, which is about twice her size, she smiles, as if nothing else matters at that moment. The waves are mysterious, the temperature is cold, yet she gets on her board, and drops wave after wave, at every opportunity. The ocean is now her playground. It’s very dangerous to surf at Pipeline (North Shore, HI), but it’s a challenge that most surfers will enjoy. There are such perfect waves in Hawaii, they’re so full of life. She slips from the board, swallows huge amounts of water, loses her breath, feels her muscles aching, yet she goes back for more, every time.

All the hard work it takes, the preparation for such activity, the aching, none of it matters. At the end of the day, leaving the ocean, she has made an art of surfing.

That is the key: Make an art of what you do.

It doesn’t really matter what it is that you do, because in everything there is art. There are so many ways to create, fashion, and make art of what you enjoy doing.

One of the ways I have chosen is poetry. Through words that I write, when no one is looking, or pressuring me, I take my imagination and blend it with the songs of my heart, and there, it becomes poetry.

Why write? Because you feel, think, imagine, and you need to express them is words, to invent on paper.

Is there a sensible way or writing poetry? Yes and no.

“Poetry is the art of uniting pleasure with truth, by calling imagination to the help of reason.” – Samuel Johnson

Poetry is written words between our imagination and reasoning. It is sensible to the subject. The more you know about the subject of your poem, the more creative you can be, and the better your poem will be.

The two most important factors of writing poetry are knowledge and practice. Knowledge and creativity come together as a whole, when you’re not simply talking about chocolate, but you are describing a mouth-watering, delicious, milky piece of chocolate, and the reader can almost taste it when he or she reads it. Practice makes it perfect. The more you describe how you feel and what you see, the better words fall in together.

Robert Frost once said, “A poem begins in delight and ends in wisdom”.

A poem can describe so much. It expresses an idea, emotion, or experience, or all three. It portrays your character. It is the beauty and sadness within all of us, which simply needs to be let out.

So keep writing, date all your poems, and save every word you write, from those many more poems can flourish. And don’t forget to post them on our site!

Hope you’ve enjoyed!

Sincerely,
