American Beauty

I guess I can say one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. Which would be totally true because I haven't seen a movie in a long time. But seriously, this was a pretty good flick, about how things are not what they seem.  Great acting performances all around. I was also impressed by how great the music was and how well it fit into the movie. Many excellent scenes and great performances didn't quite give the impact they were going for. A lot of times I felt too distant from the characters and I didn't understand what they were about or where they were coming from. But maybe that's what the director wanted. Also I enjoyed the way the story was told.

American Pie

Funny as hell! It's been a while since I laughed like that. Likable characters and believable situations is what this movies all about. Something's were a bit "off the wall", but if you think about it.. it could happen. I wouldn't call it Something About Mary, Jr., but it was pretty good. It also has a nice fuzzy ending with good closure. *** stars.

Arlington Road

Great tense moments, awesome acting from Jeff Bridges and Tim Robbins, and very smart direction make this an incredible movie. Incredibly tense beginning and the surprise ending blew me away.  It had some slow points in the middle, but other than that, I was so into it! Simply amazing! ***1/2 stars!

Blair Witch Project

This was scary scary SCARY!!! Great concept. Extremely believable acting will make you ask yourself, is this for real? The only thing that ruins the great illusion is the end credits. This is a must see, but if you have a weak stomach, just beware. Not because of gore (there is none anyway), but because the camera work can get you extremely dizzy! When I went to see another movie, the theater had to close a whole bathroom because somebody who saw it lost a couple tacos.. and a Gordita too! ***1/2 stars!

The Bone Collector

You'll never look at cabbies the same way after this one. Good moments between Angelina Jolie and Denzel Washington. Both actors did a wonderful job in believing in the situations. The movie was really about these two instead of being about the "bone collector", which I thought played out well. The story is extremely intriguing and well directed. * * * stars.

Bowfinger

Very funny. Lots of L.A. and Hollywood bashing here. There were some "L.A. Story"-esque moments in the film, but I didn't think Steve Martin went as far as he could have. The best parts of the movie is when Eddie Murphy plays the movie star's nerdy brother.  Overall, this movie borderlines on stupid and funny. **1/2 stars.

Dogma

Bizarre but excellent movie. Acting wasn't top notch, but the story and the directing was great. It plays with and twists around people's religious beliefs. Don't take this one too seriously or else you might not like it. My bizarre mind thought it to be the best movie of the fall. * * * 1/2 star

The Green Mile

Incredible movie! Any movie that makes me laugh really hard and then makes me sob like a baby will go down in my book as one of the greatest movies ever. And The Green Mile is one of these. Tom Hanks was great as well as all the supporting players. I don't want to say anything to ruin the movie so I will just tell you to see it! * * * * stars!!!!!

The Haunting

Um.... this was supposed to be scary??? I might have been scared if it weren't for the left-over ILM effects from Casper. Didn't care about the story and didn't care about the characters. I would have liked to see Liam Neeson and Catherine Zeta-Jones in a light saber fight where he would remove all of her clothes without even scratching her. yeah..... um where was I.. oh yeah.... This movie sucked!!!
* 1/2 star.

House on Haunted Hill

A little better than the Haunting although not much better. It contained a couple spooky scenes whereas The Haunting had none. But mediocre acting and a story with more holes in it than a cork bulletin board doesn't save it. the movie starts to get really interesting toward the end and then it seems as if everyone gave up on it.
** stars.

Mickey Blue Eyes

A couple excellent opening scenes could have paved the way to create a fabulous movie. But eventually this turned into a "pretty good" movie. Not as good as Runaway Bride (see below), Jeanne Tripplehorn and Hugh Grant are both good individually, but there chemistry is nothing compared to Julia Roberts and Richard Gere (See Runaway Bride below).  Ending was a bit too "Hollywood" for my tastes and forced the story to have only one outcome and thus became predictable. Overall it was pretty good. But not as good as Runaway Bride (see below), but enjoyable nevertheless. **1/2 stars.

Mission To Mars

Bad beginning, cheesy ending, and some good parts in the middle. That just about sums it up. The screenplay was so awful, even Tim Robbins and Gary Sinise couldn't do their lines justice. This movie was a huge disappointment. Interesting idea but the movie went in so many directions before it got to the point. The music was really annoying at times making cheesy moments even cheesier.  The best moments of this movie takes place on the spaceship (Apollo 13 style) rather than on the red planet itself.. I guess that's why they called it Mission TO Mars instead of Mission ON Mars. Whatever. I also had a major problem with the plot. (DON'T READ FURTHER-THIS MIGHT SPOIL THE MOVIE EVEN THOUGH THEY SPOILED IT ALREADY) Why would an advanced race destroy a lower life form just because they got the answer to the puzzle wrong, or rather didn't understand it at all,  and then later invite them in just because they came up with the correct answer!? Why couldn't the aliens just say.."Try again, please"? I guess they needed something cool to show during the preview. Whatever. I'll be waiting for the next Mars movie to come out because I'm sure it's going to be better. * 1/2 stars.

Runaway Bride

This movie stars that big-lipped woman and that grey-haired man. I was surprised how good this movie actually was. The screenplay was carefully written and the chemistry between Julia Roberts and Richard Gere was so natural. Joan Cusack and Laurie Metcalf were great too. The sensitive guy in me enjoyed this film immensely. I'm going to give this one a  whopping ***1/2 stars!

The Sixth Sense

Good story, good actors, good ending.... but for the most part..... BOOOORRRING!!!!!!!!!
If it wasn't for the ultra cool ending, this movie would suck donkey balls. It took way too long to get moving, but once it did it was really interesting. I jumped one time, so that automatically means, it's at least ok. So the bottom line is this: *1/2 star for the first 45 minutes, *** stars for the last 45 minutes.

Sleepy Hollow
I was so turned off seeing Tim Burton's last film Mars Attacks! that I was somewhat hesitant to see this one. But what a cool, cool movie. I used cool twice on purpose.. it wasn't a typo.. It was a real cool movie. Lots of heads flying all over the place. Great music, of course, from Danny Elfman, one of my favorite composers. The film looks really neat-o. It's not incredibly scary, but it's consistently spooky, except for a couple over-the-top moments that Burton squeezed in just so he can remind us that this is a "Tim Burton film", in case we forgot. * * * stars.

South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut

Freakin' hilarious! Trey Parker and Matt Stone are pure geniuses! The musical numbers were great, but due to the large amount of laughter in the theater, I missed quite a few words. The only major thing that didn't quite work for me was the Satan and Saddam story line. I also missed Jesus and Mr. Hanky. *** stars.

Star Wars- Episode One: The Phantom Menace

I'm not the hugest Star Wars fan in the world, so I wasn't as disappointed as all those hard-core fans. Jar Jar Binks didn't really annoy me as much as he did to my friends. But then again, I like ewoks so what do I know? The beginning could have been a little more exciting for my tastes (Because you know George Lucas was thinking about my tastes when he made this). All these critics were ripping on this first installment, saying that the story was so bad? What the heck did they want? This crazy complicated story with all these twists? Like Jar Jar is really Darth Maul's uncle's mother's friend's brother's former roommate's sister's refrigerator repair man? The original Star Wars was as simple as could be.. you have your good guys, you have your bad guys, and something called the Force. Remember this is the beginning of six.. count them six episodes! It can only get more complex from here. The pod race scene, the city underwater, and the last light saber fight were definitely the films highlights. My favorite character was Watto, the junk dealer.  *** stars.

The Talented Mr. Ripley

Warning: Extremely disturbing movie! This one was carefully directed and well acted. Matt Damon definitely deserves an Oscar for his performance. Gwyneth Paltrow was great too and is possible Oscar winning material as well. It's not for everyone, but this Psycho-esque movie is top notch intensity. * * * stars .

The World is Not Enough

After two previous 007 movies,  Pierce Brosnan is still perfect as the British super-spy James Bond. The beginning sequence, which I always look forward too in a Bond movie didn't impress me much, although I liked the theme song by Garbage. Awesome action through out, but it was a little slower moving than the usual Bond flicks and Denise Richards is annoying and horrible... but pretty damn hot!
* * 1/2 stars.
