Work Pictures
(Click on the thumbnails for the full size pictures.)
I work for a major newspaper as a press mechanic.
We have 4 presses with 8 Goss Headliner and 2 Goss Colorliner towers on each press.
Here are a couple pictures of our Headliner units. These are taken from the Operator Side of the units. This is where the press operator makes most of his/her adjustments. Working on the presses is a dirty job, but some of these pictures make it look a little dirtier than it normally is.
We had a major breakdown awhile back and had to remove just about everything from the Drive Side of the unit. The drive side is where all of the gears, drive shafts etc. are located. It doesn't look like much, but it took all 3 shifts working around the clock 3 days to remove everything, repair the damage and replace the parts.
This is what the drive side normally looks like.
Here is a picture of the folder. This is where all of the paper goes after it leaves the units. The folder folds and cuts the paper. If you look closely, you can see conveyor belts right in front of the yellow bar. The paper comes out of the folder and rides on this conveyor for about 10 or 12 feet. Then it goes to the Ferag. The Ferag is a conveyor system that consist of grippers that grab ahold of each paper and sends it to the packaging area.
Here is a picture of the Ferag. The press operators for that particular press are in a room to the right, just behind the glass wall. That is the quite room. It gets very loud when the presses are running, so the quite rooms enable the press operators to make adjustments to the press units from inside the room. It's much quieter inside! They normally make adjustments on the front panels when they are starting the press, but move into the quite room after things get settled down. The orange tray brings a paper to the operator when they are inside the quite room so they can check out the pages that they are responsible for. The operators are always getting a paper and looking through it to catch any bad print.
I will take my camera back to work and get some pictures of some other things.
