Academic Program
There are mainly two choices for foreign students. If you already have a law degree from your home country, you can choose a J.D. program or an LLM program. But if you don?t, the only choice is JD program because to be eligible to an LLM program, you must already hold a law degree.
LLM program is usually a 9-month program. For someone who only wants basic knowledge of American law and an advanced degree in law from an American law school, this is a perfect choice.
To apply for LLM program, you need only to take TOEFL. Not every American law school has the LLM program, but most relatively good law schools have it. In most programs, foreign students are the majority.
JD program is the first law degree program which requires three years? full-time studying. If you want to practice law in the Untied States, JD is much better than LLM. But of course, it is more expensive in terms of money and time.
To apply for JD program, you need take LSAT and TOEFL. It is often much more competitive to apply for JD than LLM because you are competing with American students.
