In the World

Mmm. So I said as the world walked by,
   How're you keeping?
   Don't you know? it said.
What a boring life you lead, it told me.
I led a boring life, before, my friend.
You think it fun to pray in empty churches,
by images no one believes, who have led
lives full of fun and fortune, maybe fame -
for I offer all this on which to depend
if you'll only just bow down to me.

Bow, you say? I said, and you won't hit me?
Bow like you mean it and all is yours.
And only for a while, of course, I told it.
Everyone dies of something, it said.
And off they go just where with that will?
All fame is fleeting, it said, Life is short.
And fortune leaves the soul's light lit?
You dwell in the darkness of life, it said.
I dwell in sight of salvation, from one hill
to one He Ascended - in the world, not of it.
