Walking (not like Thoreau)
By the Cross the pilgrims came
to shed their sins in Jesus' Name
and went as He along the way
yet humble through the flame.
On the lanes upon their knees
were sent what penitential pleas
to God for life and holiness
from those who wanted these.
Year by year they went to pray,
church by church upon the way,
and never did they love the Name
of Jesus more that day.
By heavens and the sun they swept
like a tide of angels to the steps
of each Cathedral's calming grace
that once inside they wept.
In holy grace these pilgrims came
to preach upon the road this claim:
that God be served by every heart
who travels in His Name.
