Centaur is another semi-progressive/power metal band, this time with an '80s touch. I've read other reviews that compare Centaur's "God Complex" to the bands Vanden Plas and Crimson Glory in sound and style. I am not all that familiar with Vanden Plas or Crimson Glory so I will attempt to describe Centaur based on what I am familiar with. |
1.] "Sonnenkind" - Here
we have a song that sounds like HammerFall meets '80s hair metal (perhaps Dokken), it is
very fast and heavy, there is a lot of nice crunchy guitar work going on here. This song
isn't on the level of most of HammerFall's or Dokken's work but it is still pretty good. 2.] "Game of Life" - This track presents us with some cool opening guitar work. Centaur's vocalist, Stefan Kebel, has a rough, high voice but it is a good voice. This song does tend to be a little tedious at times but it is okay. "Game of Life" is vaguely reminiscent of some of Queensryche's early work. 3.] "The Price of Money" - I really like the way Centaur's guitarist, Stefan Lohmann, does these cool intros, this time paired with Christoph Welb's keyboards. But the vocal melodies on this one just aren't that strong. Otherwise, its a decent, up tempo tune. 4.] "Echo of an Empty Shell" - Hey, it's the story of my life! Just kidding. This song opens with light, cool-sounding keyboards and turns heavy on the guitar, there is a really cool riff going on here. Stefan Kebel's voice sounds pretty darn angry, too. This tune borders on becoming very good but never quite reaches that level, instead it remains just okay. 5. "The Seed" - Wow! Great (and terrifying) opening! The guitar is awesome, baby! But the vocal melodies lose me quickly (I am the enemy of vocal melodies, it seems). Fortunately, the guitar saves this song. The vocals are angry (I'm afraid Stefan Kebel is going to jump out of my cd player and hurt me) and sound pretty good, I guess it's just those vocal melodies that bother me. It is a reoccurring theme of my life as an album reviewer. 6. "Land of Gold" - Crunch, baby, crunch! Yep, the guitar is awesome, again. But I could live with more melodic vocal melodies. The vocals during the chorus are really creepy and operatic and that is pretty cool. Plus, the keyboard work is good...but not good enough to save this song from being average. 7. "An Ode to a Memory" - Piano time and it's soothing, very relaxing. This ballad almost sounds like...Poison!!! What the Hell?!? Actually, this is a pretty good song. The heavy guitar joins in during the chorus, just so you know. 8. "Ultimate Answer" - Drums! Guitar! Vocals! Hey, this is a pretty neat song, fast-paced and everything. But this Stefan Kelb guy is scaring the heck out of me, his voice is so angry (but good)! Hmmm...this tune kind of reminds me of HammerFall...a little. This song also contains a cool guitar solo. 9. "To Be Or Not To Be" - Rock on, my friends! It's the opening to the song "The Mirror" by Dream Theater! Not quite but it's just as cool and heavy. And the keyboards are very symphonic, which is a good thing. The vocal melodies are actually decent here...except during the chorus. But keep that guitar chugging, I like! 10. "Axiom" - More great Dream Theater-like heavy guitar here, which is a big plus. And the keyboards sound very haunting in the background. If only the vocal melodies could match the music...oh, well. |
Centaur is a difficult band to describe, there
is a definite harshness to their sound reminding me of Lynch Mob a bit. At times, Centaur
sounds a little like Dokken, Queensryche, HammerFall and Dream Theater, too, but none of
these comparisons describe their style accurately (but I tried). Overall, "God
Complex" is a fairly solid album. And if you like a guitar that really chugs along
(HammerFall, Lynch Mob, Dream Theater's heavier stuff), you may end up really enjoying
this album. But, as I've said, the vocal melodies don't do much for me. |
