The Peru Checklist includes native Peruvian breeding species, regular visitors, casuals and accidentals from other regions that are believed to have strayed there without direct human aid, and well-established introduced species that are now part of its avifauna.

The list is compiled from several sources, including the online Avibase checklist for Peru, the Clements checklist for birds of the world, 6th Edition, the AOU South American Classification Committee's web site, and the field guide Birds of Peru, published in 2007, by Schulenberg et al. The last two sources were heavily consulted when deriving the notes for accidental and endemic species.

Parentheses beside the family names indicate the number of species I've seen out of all the possible species in that family. As of the latest update the list includes 91 families.

Notes: "E" = Endemic. "A" = accidental/casual - known from a small number of records, possibly vagrant; "" preceding name = observed. (Mouse over the checkmark when present to see date and location of first-ever observation.)
