This is at least one man's opinion: the number one epidemic running rampant in the civilized world today is that mental, physical and emotional disease known as "stress." Who isn't "stressed-out" these days? It is simply a fact of life: there are immense demands put on virtually every person who walks on this planet in this time and space. Paying the bills, caring for children, rush hour, job insecurity, dealing with the boss, eating on the run, the car is in the shop again, relationship problems, the mother-in-law, life disappointments, studying for exams, computer crashes, high cholesterol. You fill in the blanks. Let me ask
you: Is it or is it not endless? The pressure will be there, come what may. However, from my experience, there are definitely ways to not only deal with that pressure, but to also use it as a means to grow as a person. Here is an abbreviated list of some of the tools I use myself, as well as teach others, to gain the upper hand on stress:
At the first sign of feeling pressured, start breathing very long and deep. This brings relaxation. Devote a particular time each day to spiritual practice: yoga, meditation, prayer, reading scriptures, attending church or whatever suits the occasion. This brings perspective and peace of mind, no matter what the circumstance. Workout at least 45 minutes per day. This keeps one young in mind, body and spirit. (And lookin' good to boot!) Stay away from foods that overtax the nervous system. That's right, kick that latte habit at Starbucks! For God's Sake, take up a hobby. If life is all work and no play, you've got nobody to blame but yourself. Find time to chill out at the end of every day. No need to apologize for mindlessness. Do I hear Seinfeld rerun?
