Welcome to my Relics of Earth fanpage!
This is a place for
me to gush all my fan-related drool over my favorite TV show, Relics of Earth (on
SHtv channel downstairs on Sundays at 2pm.) If you haven't seen this show yet,
you SHOULD. But, of course, if you found my page, then you must know all about
it!
Just in case you don't, here's what you need to know:
The show is set a long time after the Earth was evacuated and distant planets
were colonized. It happens so far in the future, in fact, that mankind has evolved
into a huge array of subspecies, from the warlike Dragons to the golden-eyed
heretics of the Unity systems.
Many of these offshoots of humanity claim to be the only living examples of
"True Humans" in the galaxy. At least, Unity and the Centrals, do and
this may be leading up to another war.
There have been many wars over the past few centuries or so, it seems, including
a devastating one where the Unity conquered the Dragons and made this
fearsome warrior species into their pet shock troops.
In the meantime, however, the Earth has remained quarantined. A
group of life-protectors known as the Cradle Monks have come to inhabit a huge
"ring station," surrounding the ravaged and abandoned planet, creating
a neutral but forbidden region of space caught in between the machinations of the
Unity and the seething hatred of the Centrals.
As our story opens, a rogue crew of dangerous customers approaches the
remains of Old Earth and is rescued by the Cradle Monks from certain death at the
hands of one Warden Alabaster.
It turns out that certain sinister fractions have discovered that a "sleeper
ship" full of cryogenically frozen evacuees from the disaster which claimed
Old Earth may have crash landed on the very world they fled all those centuries
ago! Although ordered to kill anyone with a connection to this crashed ship on
site, Warden Alabaster seems to have scruples enough to let the rogue crew reach
the sanctuary of the Cradle Monks.
Among the survivng members of the rogue crew of the illegal transport shuttle
Chaucer are Captain Raylin Key, the exotic golden-eyed skipper and her
tough-as-nails second-in-command, M'Kain the Dragon. The laid-back ship's
engineer, Selano, also survives.
One of the sinister figures who chartered the Chaucer in the first place, Dr.
Cullen (who resembles a lizard-monkey, both inside and out, in my opinion) has
survived Warden Alabaster's law enforcement missles as well. By the end of the
first episode, he confesses the real reason he's come to Old Earth. He knows of
the crashed sleep ship full of original humans and hopes to get to it before more
sinister forces do. Although he doesn't tell his companions, it's also clear that Dr.
Cullen also has plans to profit personally from this discovery.
Watching the crew during their exploits on Old Earth are two of their rescuers, the
Cradle Monks Brother Narat and Brother Rush. Brother Narat has the instincts of
a killer and Brother Rush is some kind of idiot. While Narat can talk battle plans
and weapon statistics like a seasoned pro with M'Kain the Dragon, Brother Rush
is the guy who asks the stupid questions most of the audience needs answered.
(Although I wish he'd asked what Rambunctium was.) I'm looking forward to next
week's scene where Brother Narat lets fly with an automatic laser weapon!

Major Factions
Unity - A large system of habitable planets known as The
Unity. Everyone from this system has the same large golden eyes (cat eyes) with
horizontal slit pupils; as over the generations this has enabled their race to better
cope with the rapid light changes on the planets. Most planets have at least 2 suns
and all planets rotate faster than 24 hrs around their sun(s). On The Unity
systems there is no clear identifiable race (as was known on old earth) but
instead due to generations of intermarriage, all people exhibit various features of
all old earth races which varies from person to person. In a ethnocentric way, a
Unitar (person from The Unity) will fixate on people not having eyes like them,
even when they have hair/skin like or the same color as them; because there is
no discernible race on The Unity. The Unitar are approximately 20% taller,
heavier and more muscular and live approximately 20-50% longer compared to
the legendary old earth humans due to subtle differences in the planetary
environments.
From the Unitar's perspective, the concept of a "pure human" is considered to be at
best just folk lore and at worse a conspiracy designed to undermine the Unity
religion. The traditional and overwhelming belief held by The Unity people of their
origins is that life was given to their people by the God Lothcar and Goddess
Salrynn, it was the union of the two that gave forth life on the planets Coreevin
and Mandeesha. The Gods made humans in their own image and over time
humans on the two planets became more technology advanced. When they were
able to develop external planet communication and then space craft the two
civilizations on the separate planets discovered each other and The Unity was
founded.
Over the centuries other habitable planets in the system were settled, including
Raylin's home world of Algomir. It was the Unitar's belief in "we are united as
one" that caused a very even expansion on all habitable planets in the Unity
sector over the next hundred yrs; making them a very powerful force to be
reckoned with. As The Unity's constantly expanding territories started to encroach
on other race's worlds, small skirmishes and then wars began to break out. For
the last couple of hundred yrs, the Unitar have been at war with someone for
territory, prior to 20 odd yrs ago they where on the losing end of battle with the
Dragons for many yrs, since then they have been winning. Raylin enlisted in the
Unitar Royal Flight Service 15 yrs ago and was honorably discharged 3 yrs ago
with a commendable record, after serving in 3 wars. She requested a discharge
as upon completing an assignment she was injured and although it was only
temporarly, she was plain tired of fighting and seeing the bloodshed over land.
Since the "beginning of time" there has been folk lore of the "pure human" and
that life came from the stars rather than from the God and Goddess and
developing in the Unity
sector but that was considered by most people only a legend and by many as
heresy. There is always the occasional zealot individual or group that from time
to time tried to undermine society by confusing the weak of faith with such fool
hardy nonsense. Most all Unitar believe that they are the true pure humans and
they are made in the God's image; however they are not all in agreement on how
the other humanoid races have come into being. The majority of the time when
someone dares to speak about "pure human", "origins from the stars" or most
recently the possibility of "origins from old earth" they are quickly hushed as
trouble makers.
According to Shannon Liska, one of the head writers for the show, Captain Raylin is
a perfect example of the average Unity citizen. She has never had any reason to
question her devout belief in the traditional religion. The idea of life originating
from some where other than the two Unity planets and/or that her own race is
not THE pure human race, would be quite "Algomir shattering" to her. Indeed, it
has always seemed obvious to her the fact that her Unity race was somewhat
superior to the other races due to their golden eyes and often times the slightly
larger than average size and length of life span of the Unitars in comparison to a
majority of other humanoids. Despite being some what ethnocentric and
religiously devout, the Unitar have treated and gotten along with other races
pretty well excluded being at war over territory space continually since they have
expanded from the Unity sector.
The Centrals - Unlike the relatively laid-back, if deceptive, faithful of
Unity, it is clear that the Centrals are religious fanatics. Although they haven't
shown up in the series much so far, it seems clear to me that the Centrals pose a
greater threat than the Unity peoples. The Centrals clearly beleive themselves to
be the only remaining examples of "True Humanity" left in the cosmos.
This is ironic, since it has been implied that the Centrals aren't even humanoid! I
think the Centrals may be a futuristic parallel to fundamentalist muslims, or
perhaps just fundamentalists in general. Staff writer Rp Bowman has said that
the Centrals, when they appear in the show, will pay more attention to Psychic
Holy Men than their own War Leaders. What this means for the Cradle Monks and
their refugees remains to be seen!
The Cradle Monks - Although it has been hinted that the Cradle Monks are
more than the life-affirming peaceniks that they seem, including hints that there
is a whole seedy underbelly to the giant ring station surrounding Old Earth that
they inhabit, it's clear to me that the Monks only have real influence in the Earth
solar system.
The Dragons - Not really a faction, more of a sub-faction. The war-like
Dragons are feared soldiers throughout this sector of space. M'Kain has been
shown bristling under Captain Raylin's authority and, by extension, that of the
Unity. Some people are betting on a big revolt in the show's future, but a lot of
these guys are the ones who call the Unity faithful the Unitards, so I'm not
crossing my fingers just yet! Besides, a Dragon Revolt story arc would probably be
a long way down the line. Right now, we still have to deal with M'Kain's quest to recuit defenders for the ring station (which I'm assuming the Spin Off will mostly concern itself with - I'm so sorry Justin had to leave the show!!)
I'm still wondering about the lost sleeper ship full of
original humans they keep mentioning this season! I want to see inside.
