Letters About Kimberly The following are letters written by school representatives. The first is from her high school counselor during her senior year. The next two are from college representatives written to the family after she was killed. |
Monterey High School Office of Larry Hess, Counselor To Whom It May Concern: It is my pleasure to write this letter of recommendation for Ms. Kimberly Moore. She is a senior at Monterey High School and is applying for scholarships available throught the Office of New Student Relations at Texas Tech University. I have known Kimberly for almost three years as her class guidance counselor. I find Kimberly to be one of those "quietly impressive" students. Kimberly does not go to extremes to draw attention to herself, yet does all the things I like to see students do to get involved and be successful. She has earned a GPA of 3.62 and will be an Honor Graduate at our May ceremony and has pursued a college-preparatory curriculum that includes advanced math and science courses. She has " peppered" her other courses with involvement in diverse activities like theater, Spanish, computers. psychology and agriculture. She is a very interesting girl! Her application will list all of the clubs, organizations, and volunteer activities she has been involved with (including work experience). In many cases she has been nominated for recognitions in those activities. Of particular note is her love for sports. She has been involved in tennis, basketball, and track both in and out of the school system. I think she has long loved sports and considers them an important part of her life, something that gives her joy. But, I doubt that her application reveals that she is asthmatic, and has fought the limitations of that disease to participate at her fullest in all the sports she loves so much. I had to learn about this from the school nurse because Kimberly, (in typical fashion) pays no special attention to this condition and does not feel like it is remarkable in itself. I feel it is a good indicator of the "stuff" that Kimberly is made of. It is for these reasons that I highly recommend Kimberly to you for scholarship consideration. I think she has shown a character that is unique among her peers, and that will carry her through difficult times she may find in her college years and in her life beyond. I would be happy to answer any further questions you may have concerning Kimberly's application. Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely, Larry Hess, Counselor |
November 24, 1997 Dear Rodney and Yolonda: Words cannot adequately express the deep sorrow felt by all of us at Texas Tech University due to the death of your daughter, Kimberly. One of the University's cherished traditions is to lower our flags at Memorial Circle to half mast to honor our departed students and symbolize our loss.
