S hort Notes to give you a glimpse
of what life is  like in
"God's Country"

September 5th-Set your calendars.  Pro Anglers in the In-Fisherman Professional Walleye Trail (PWT) Mercury Marine Championship will be fishing the Keweenaw Waterway for big money in September. Local anglers will have an opportunity to test their skills on the waters with the pros and go for their own “gold”.  It may well be worth the $350 fee. The event is scheduled for Septemper 17-19th.    The Pro Anglers will fish the water of Chassell Bay as well as the Portage Canal.  Many promotional items are given to area children with formal awards at the SDC on the MTU campus.
September 4th- Looking for something to do this weekend.  The Ojibwa Casino is hosting Mud Drags.  They're fun to watch but noisy.  I can hear the roar of the engines at my house and I'm a mile away.  Are mud drags a way for the big boys to play in the mud like they did when they were kids?

September 5, 2004- A perfect weekend!  Saturday was beautiful and today is cloudy but still perfect.  The bay has been busy with many type of boats and activities.  We've seen jet skies, sail boats, pontoon boats, fishing boats, and even something that looked like it belonged in the yacht category.  The stars were out in all their glory on Friday night without a cloud to be seen.  We've been celebrating Dave's birthday and enjoying the deck and the great outdoors.
September 1st-
Schools days.. those days of lunches, and buses and cheer.  What do you think of the school lunch menu in this day and age?  Chicken nuggets, coleslaw, fruit, milk... French Bread Cheese pizza, Tossed salad, and fruit.  I'd like to go to Arvon Township Schools.  Boneless chicken breast, augratin potatoes, green beans and pudding.  What happened to the days of those fabulous peanut butter sandwiches with gobs and gobs of peanut butter.
August 30th-
What is going on?  August is usually our warmest month of the year.  We had an average high of 70 degrees this past week with an average low of 51.  When I was a kid..... Evening rarely dipped below 60 degrees in August and we saw many days near the 100 mark.  Global warming?  Not in the UP.
August 29th,-- You have never seen a more beautiful moon rise that we had this evening.  The moon is dark orange and shines on the bay like a golden road.  I have no doubt that we have found the gold at the end of the moon glow.  It ends on the shore directly below us.  It is more beautiful than any man made fireworks or light show.  I wish you could all see it... of course you could have... it was on my web camera.  I'm sorry to say it lost a lot on my small camera but it was still visible.

August 26th-Jane Summersett is the daughter of Mark and Barb Summersett of L'Anse.  Jane and her dance partner, Elliot Pennington, of Boston, MA earned the Novice Silver medal at the US nationals this past January.  They later earned a gold overall medal in Tallin Estonia in March.  They are now on the US Figure Skating Team C, and will be traveling to Courchevel, France and then to Harbin, China in September. Way to go Jane!
August 25, 2004-Why does someone from San Diego, CA merit a spot in the L'Anse Sentinel's letter to the editor page?  This guy is criticizing us for attending the George Bush rally in Marquette.  I say, keep you criticisms to the California papers.
August 16, 2004-  The Moving Wall may be coming to Baraga.  The traveling half-size replicas of the Washington DC Vietnam Veterans Memorial have been headquartered in California for two decades.  Due to skyrocketing cost the "Wall" founder John Devitt has decided to make the move to the UP.  Local supporters would like to have the wall installed permanently at Sand Point in Baraga.
August 12, 2004-Chairs wanted.... Calling all chairs from porches, attics, garages and basements.  The goal is to round up 2005 blue and white chairs for Finn Fest in 2005.  The pile of chairs at the head of the bay between L'Anse and Baraga is growing.  It is a strange sight to behold.
August 8, 2004 -- This is a party weekend. The guys spent Friday golfing (while I worked) and a whole group of us enjoyed Friday night on our neighbors deck.  It was beautiful outside, much too nice to be inside.  The food was out of this world!  We tried banana's on the grill.  Peel back a small strip and scoop out some banana.  Fill the hollow with chocolate chips or hot fudge, top with some mini marshmallows.  Reclose the peel, wrap in foil and place on the grill.  Gently heat the banana until the chocolate melts.  My grandkids will love this one....  We attended another party on Saturday and enjoy some more fabulous food and visited with some interesting people.  We played a few games of croquet.. yours truely losing..  and enjoyed watching the sailboats and power boats cruise along Lake Superior.    All we really needed to have a good time on a day like today was the lawn chair and the view.  Looking over the lake toward the Huron Mountains is a treat in itself.   Summer is not a time to try and diet.  All the good food is the reason I get out and walk three miles at 6 AM.  I think it is time to increase the walk to twice a day.
August 6, 2004 -- The weather just doesn't get any nicer.  My flowers are in full bloom and the vegetable gardens are beginning to produce.  The bay is dotted with boats from early morning until well after dark.  The moon has been glowing brightly and casting its golden glow across the bay like a yellow brick road.  If I rented my house out by the week in the summer, I'd be rich.  People would pay me thousands for what I enjoy every day.  Sorry folks, it's not for rent but you can come and visit.
August 4, 2004-The Michigan Corrections Organization has placed a full page ad in the L'Anse Sentinel this week.  They are concerned about the proposed elimination of the gun towers at the Baraga Maximum Correctional Facility.  MCO is urging us to contact the Michigan Department of Corrections and the Governor.   "Gun Towers are the last line of defense...they protect the officers who work inside the walls, and the families who live outside the walls."  The also held an information picket on US41 today.
August 3, 2004 -- Primary Election Day.  This is an unusual primary for the area.  We have many contested races.  Longtime incumbents are being challenged in many races.  Get out and vote, these elections aren't like national elections.  YOUR vote can make the difference.  We'll all miss the election signs decorating our lawns when this is over!
August 2, 2004 --Mark your calendars for August 14-15th.  It's the 22nd annual Lac Vieux Desert Pow Wow.  The event will take place North of Land O Lakes, WI and is on the shores of Katikitegoning.  The first grand entry is at 1:00 on Saturday.  You'll be able to try some Native American food such as Manomin, or wild rice.  You can also purchase handmade jewelry, clothing, gifts and souveniers.
August 1, 2004-- The DNR will most likely deny it but there is a cougar in L'Anse.  Residents along Bayshore drive have seen at least one cougar.  Serveral people have seen the cougar but they are not sure if they are seening the same one or if there is more than one.  If you live in that area be sure to check on your kids if they tell you the saw a big kitty in the yard.
July 31, 2004 -- I hadn't been to Second Sand Beach near Pequaming in years.  It is a fabulous beach with warm white sand and few people.  We visited some friends who have a cottage on the beach thoroughly enjoyed the warm sand, fresh air,  gently waves, fire and the company.  They have been enjoying a two week vacation, spending time fishing and relaxing.  The weather has cooperated for them as well as the fish.  You haven't eaten fish until you try one that is served within hours of being caught.
