The
winter of 1996-1997 set some new snowfall records.
We are well prepared to handle the snow in the Upper Peninsula but enough
is enough. After a while you run out of places to put snow. If we left
it in the driveway and just drove on it we would need to step down to go
into the house.
Snow brooms just won't work
here and using a shovel can be a impossible task. We need at least
a snowblower, maybe a fourwheeler with a plow. Every neighborhood has at
least one kind soul who will use his 4X4 with a plow to push the banks
back or maybe to break open a drift. Sounds kinda serious doesn't it.
When things really get out of hand a Pettibone
Carylift can be counted on to haul away some of the not so beautiful white
stuff.
Snow is a way of life in the Upper Peninsula.
We have learned to deal with it if not to love it. We cross country ski,
downhill ski, snowmoble, skate, ice fish, and even build snow men and snow
statues. It's not unusual to hear of a sledding or toboggan party. The
road commission does its job and has the roads plowed so we can get to
work, school, or just shopping. Some Yoopers even wait for a snow storm
just to take to the roads and see how bad it really is outside, not to
safe a practice sometimes, but that's the way it goes.
