DOUGLAS UBC SEPTEMBER 30, 2002

COUNCIL MEETING

 

The moderator opened the meeting and turned it over to the host Pastor Jerry Horsman for devotional.

The scripture was Psalm 21, highlighting how great God is and the things and ways he gives them to us.

  1. The power of the most high.
  2. The power of blessing
  3. Prepares the way ahead of us.
  4. Protects us.
  5. Gives power of Salvation.
  6. Gives prosperity.
  7. Performs for us.

Jerry closed the devotion with prayer.

The moderator welcomed everyone to the meeting.

Regrets: Susan Christie, Murray Watt, Harry Waugh.

The agenda was accepted as presented on a motion by Ron Hagerman/Pauline Lewis.-Carried.

The clerk read the minutes of the last Council meeting held at Burtt's Corner UBC on May 11, 2002. Correction -Date for the next Executive meeting October 28, 2002 accepted as amended.

Treasurer's report needs to correct the budget figure on Men's Commission.

The moderator turned the meeting over to Karl Csaszar chairperson of the Association Sub-Committee.

Hand out was given for consideration as Karl explained in more detail. (See enclosure)

Questions.

What is the time frame for completion of this process? -Likely 12- 18 months.

What of the present Council? -It will be suspended after present mandates of Commissions completed.

Why were there no women on the Committee when 40% of the Council are women? -Oversight.

How are we going to phase this in? -No direct answer, but new Executive elected will work on the timetable and procedure.

COMMISSION REPORTS

Women's--Alice Gilmore

5 members present.

All of the Women's Commission attended all or part of the Convention programs in Moncton.

Letters have been sent out to 29 Women's Societies and Groups. This represents 350 women. The report of the Provincial was included and a copy of "Together Magazine" from Baptist World Alliance.

Little Lights a children's program in progress since 1909, covers children from cradle to 5 years of age. -2 new groups have been established in our association at 2nd Kingsclear UBC and Marysville UBC, this was formerly called "Mission Band".

The speaker for the Women's program at Association will be Jeff McCarrell at 1:00 pm, they will have the speaker before their business meeting so that the men can attend.

Baptist Women's Day of prayer is Monday November 4th.

Budget request is for $100.00

Men's--John Allaby

2 members present.

Discussion took place on various subjects.

The budget request is for $150.00.

Christian Training--Larry Matthews

Larry requested a place to keep any video material purchased for the association. It was decided to contact Brunswick St. UBC, as is our official address.

Social Action--Claudia Tucker

Reviewed the Chaplaincy Service with Paul Thompson. The current service is accomplished in 4-6 hours and paid at approximately $100/week.

Requested an additional $25 per week for expenses which would increase the budget to $6300/ year. We should be considering requesting a contribution from Northwest assoc. to cover visits to out of town patients.

The Commission recommends the $25 increase.

A committee will be formed to evaluate the Chaplaincy program and to set up a job description if one doesn't presently exist. The Committee will be composed of Claudia Tucker, Paul Thompson and another Pastor. This report will be returned to the November Council meeting. This proposal was made on a motion by Jim McClare/ John Allaby.--Carried.

Missions--Joan Seale

4 members plus the Communications Director present.

Will continue to plan the next Benefit Concert for the Spring-Date to be announced.

Only 2 churches have requested grants-Nashwaak Village and Hanwell UBC.

The Treasurer's Report shows $2370.62 is still unallocated and should be used.

Budget request is $100.00.

Finance Commission--Ron McGuigan

2 members present.

Balance September 30, 2002 $5,913.17

Expected income 5,485.48

Balance $11,398.65

Committed $9,880.00

Balance at year end $1,518.65 (surplus)

Expectations for 2003--Income $19,100

Expenses $19,500

Deficit $ 400

Ministry--Doug Hapeman

5 members present.

Meeting opened with prayer and considered 3 candidates for license, 2 for lay Pastors program and one for Association License to Minister.

Mark Hunter of Douglas UBC was interviewed and recommended for an Association License to Minister.

Two candidates are recommended for the Lay pastors program. Joel Scott of Nashwaaksis UBC and Ralph LeBlanc from Nackawic UBC.

A motion was made to accept all the reports as presented by Karl Csaszar/ Janet Howland.--carried.

A motion to accept the report of the Association Sub-Committee sections A through E and present it to the Fall Association meeting was made Jerry Horsman/Pauline Lewis.--Carried.

The moderator thanked the host church for the use of their premises and the delicious refreshments.

A motion to adjourn was made by John Allaby.

We closed with prayer by Jerry Horsman.
