We have made quite a number of changes to the way the event is run and eliminated many of the restrictions the event had originally imposed. That orange snow fence is long gone. There are NO restrictions as to how many fires per unit or street. There are NO requirements for storing powder in a remote building or even a tent separated from your unit. Ramrods WILL be allowed during drills and demonstrations for the public.

These restrictions were originally imposed by Lake County Forest Preserve's insurance company. They had no previous experience in events like ours and were very nervous. We were successful in negotiating the removal of these rules in large part to your attention to safety and your pride in a good presentation. We are proud to say that this event's safety record is outstanding.

The atmosphere has changed quite a bit over the past few years. If you were some of the original participants who have hesitated in returning due to some past occurrences, why not give us another try? We believe that you will be greatly pleased. As always, we do take any and all suggestions to improve our event. Drop us a line through our Registration/Information page.

You have a few options to pre-register. You may either call the Lake County Museum @ 847-526-7878 or write them to request the registration packet. You may also click here to access our online registration and information page. We will send you the information packet with all the available details of the event. When you arrive at the event, please confirm your registration and pick up your meal tickets. The site opens early Friday afternoon. The registration tent will be by the main entrance and will be manned late into the evening and again Saturday morning. Walk-ons are welcome, but any Military participant will be attached to a unit. We encourage your pre-registration to help us plan for your attendance.

There will be a semi-scripted tactical taking place on Saturday morning from approximately 9 to 11 (or when the objective is obtained) on over 200 acres of Forest Preserve land. The site has some heavy woods, large unmowed fields, ravines, as well as some groomed trails. The area appears quite untouched and is beautiful. It is unusual for a Midwest event to include this in the weekend's schedule. 1998 was the first year we had a Reenactors'-only tactical and it was received well by all. The objective and basic rules of engagement will be included in the registration packet: the basic rules of engagement will be reviewed during Officer's Call Saturday Morning. Your unit's role will be determined by your Commanders.

There will be civilian and military seminars offered on Saturday afternoon. Please send us your suggestions if you would like a particular subject covered. Dinner will be served by the Lake County Museum for the participants after the seminars. Please be sure to register and pick up your meal ticket.

There will be Twilight Tours of the camps for the public late Saturday afternoon (yes, you will have plenty of time to eat and relax before they start). We welcome your offers of participation as either a "Tour Stop" or as a Tour Guide. This is a great opportunity to hone your first, second or third person impression so early in the season.

We encourage all Military branches to prepare a short presentation in first, second or third person. As an example, last year one of the Infantry explained all of the gear he carried while using a young visitor as his assistant. The boy was thrilled to be wearing the soldier's kepi and coat and holding his musket, but amazed at how heavy it all can get. It was a very effective presentation enjoyed by both the reenactor as well as the public. Your Civilian living history interpretations are also encouraged. This is a chance to share the knowledge in the area you have found most interesting in a forum that encourages communication between reenactor and visitor.

We have done tours for the last two years and they have been considered extremely successful by all. The visitors enjoy them: they feel comfortable asking the questions they always wanted to, but didn't want to interupt us to do so. The reenactors liked them because they didn't have to try to catch someone's attention as they walked past camp, looking but too shy to stop. We have had many requests from different units to be sure to include them this year- please let us know as soon as possible your interest so we can include you in our schedule.

The first tours should begin about 4pm. The last tour should end by 8pm or so at which time the camps will close to the public. This will allow us time for some entertainment of our own sponsored by the Lake County Museum. You do not have to participate in the tours if you do not care to, but in respect to all of the others who do, your cooperation in keeping the camps as authentic as possible while the visitors are still with us would be greatly appreciated.

On Sunday there will be a spectator-oriented battle in the afternoon and other activities during the day. We will also be commemorating Flag Day.

We welcome all units to this event. We are lucky that the site is large and the battlefield can be expanded if necessary. There is plenty of space for Infantry maneuvers, lots of elbow room for Artillery and room to gallop for the Cavalry.

We know there is a large Infantry contigent in the Chicago/Milwaukee area and know the public would appreciate seeing you out in force. It is impressive seeing a large body of men entering a field and preparing to see the elephant. The ground is level and open enough for marching and drill, but it is not a cleared field that has no shade or natural cover.

There is a great opportunity for the Artillery here, as the ground for Sunday's battle is high and dry. The field is very large and lightly rolling with some treed areas as well as clear ground. It easy to bring pieces on the field as well as retire them at the end of the weekend. There will be approved iron horses to help pull smaller pieces into the tactical area on Saturday.

There is a strong Dismounted Cavalry growth in this area and their participation is strongly encouraged. As far as the mounted Cavalry, this event is well known due to the large battlefield with room to roam without the safety concerns that a much smaller field presents.

As far as other branches... because of the location of the tactical, there is a need for the Engineers to evaluate what would be "good ground" for their troops. The Signal Core is needed to help the Commanders communicate over the generous, rolling terrain. Of course the Medical Branch is required to try to repair the damage done during the skirmishes. There will be bounty offered for all branches. Details are contained in the registration packets.

There is generously shaded authentic camping throughout the site. The land is high and dry. Hay and straw will be available. There will be a meal on Saturday for all pre-registered participants: be sure to pick up your meal tickets when you confirm your registration as you arrive. After the camps close to the public Saturday evening, Lake County Museum is sponsoring entertainment. There is ample water and "necessaries". There is a modern camping area with some hookups also available. There will be sutlers on site with food and drink (for a fee, of course) as well as others anxious to supply your needs. Lakewood Forest Preserve is an easy drive to restaurants, grocery stores and gas stations in case your supply train has been left behind.
