Amateur Radio Operators have a long history and tradition of using their skills and equipment to assist during disasters and emergencies. In support of this important volunteer function the Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) was established by the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) to formalize training and techniques for emergency communications. In addition, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has authorized the Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service (RACES), restricting operations on dedicated frequencies to RACES-authorized stations during a Communications Emergency.
Amateurs work closely with local police, fire and emergency organizations in addition to federal agencies and national emergency relief organizations. On a more regular basis, amateurs volunteer in communities throughout the country to supply communications for walk-a-thons and charitable events, emergency siren tests, emergency simulations, and severe weather spotting.
