Old Faithful Inn

Old Faithful Inn

Old Faithful Inn, amazingly, was built during the winter of 1903-04. It was so cold that winter that the workers had to keep their tools near the fire so they wouldn't shatter when they were used. Considering the severity of the winters in Yellowstone, I have often wondered why they undertook the construction during that season. No matter the wisdom of the construction schedule, the final result was grand. The Inn has a charm all its own. Of course, you can stay there, if you make reservations early enough, but even if you don't stay there, be sure to walk through the lobby. All of the wood and stone used in the lobby was gathered from the park. In keeping with his desire to incorporate the Inn into the natural setting, Robert Reimer, the architect, found pieces of wood for the decorations that required as little wood working as possible. In the process, he created a great architectural space that would be almost impossible to duplicate.
