Personal Notes:
The Balok beach is a stretch of sandy beach just 15 Km North of Kuantan town in the state of Pahang, on the East Coast of West Malaysia. Kuantan is a small coastal town approximately 300kms from Kuala Lumpur, the Capital City.
It has a bay of approx. 20 km wide with a side-shore wind blowing during the seasonal North East Monsoon. The bay is pretty shallow and safe for boardsailing with waves and chop ranging from 0.5 to 2 metres depending on wind and tide conditions and on rare occations could go up to 3 metres.
This place is good for chop hopping and at times flat water blasting ( mornings !). Consistant wind blows from about Christmas to about as late as March. This is presently the best sailing conditions in Malaysia as the beach is wide and safe for intermediate sailors.
Washing facilities and temporary board sand rig storage facilities are available at the Balok beach municipal water sports centre as well as pretty inexpensive accomodation for long stays. By the way the food is great too!
Recommended boards to bring range from a 260 to a 290 slalom or convertable. Recommended sail size range from about the nominal 5.5sq mtrs to 6.6mtrs for a 60kg sailor.
There were a couple of PBA events held here in the past. For the experienced sailors who prefers challenging conditions, there is a stretch of beach 20 km north of the Balok beach called herating beach where the Wind and Waves are much larger during the Monsoon. Wind is also side-shore. Nominal Wind conditions in this area during the monsoon is about a force 4 to 6, with waves rangingfrom 2 to 3 metres. ( However there are no washing facilities here )
