Last October 1 and 2, 1994, the PLDT Mountaineering Club conducted its First Training Climb at Mt. Makiling via San Miguel, Sto. Tomas, Batangas. The requisite climb of the Basic Mountaineering Course was completed by twenty two (22) trainees, all of whom underwent a rigorous physical training program, in preparation for this climb.
The trainees who completed the first requisite climb are Mon Vasquez (MDG/MMC), Che Wamelda (RTD-Sampaloc), Annie Nebres (ServAss II), Del Santos (WAREHOUSE), Allan Alvarez (MarkPlan) andJoven Despabiladeras (CABO - B) of the "LAGALAG" group; Joey Gabat (MarkPlan), Noel Sarabillo (Mkti OPSIM), Ricky Miguel (RTD Garnet), Asher Elenzano (IOTServ I), Girlie "Yeye" Dimayuga (MetTraf) and Ricky "Doc" Giron (MEDICAL) of the "TRAILBLAZERS" group; Rey De Guzman (MetTraf), Te Gaspar (SalAd), Jonjie Maranan (MetTraf), Rudy Hernandez (StockServ) and Jun Orpilla (QCID) of the "HIGHLANDERS" group; and Manny Caneos (StockServ), Lenie Yumang (BUDGET), Jhun Manahan (SAFETY), Joel Almariego (RTD-Sampaloc), Peter Lumanao (Mkti OPSIM) and Eric Tigas (QCID) of the "SUMMIT QUEST" group.

Contrary to the announced weather forecast, it was a bright and sunny day for Day 1, October 1. Prior to the ascent from "jump-off", the trainees were briefed on trail movements and backpacks were inspected for proper loading. The loads per group were propotionally distributed among its members. Safety was likewise emphasized by the Core Group. The members of the Core Group were given different responsibilities to insure strict compliance of the trainees to practice proper trail etiquette.

E J Santos (DATANET), the Expedition Leader, was complemented by Noel Farrales (Makati PABX) and Antonio Dimatulac (MKTI OPSIM). Core members who handled the different groups were Jess Hornedo (Makati C.O.), Nette Villaflor (MNTD)and Gemma Tejada (MNTD) for the "LAGALAG"; Danny Sta.Cruz (Mkti OPSIM) and Joewe Cinco for the "TRAILBLAZERS"; Jojo Del Mundo (Mkti OPSIM), Weng Duran (MNTD) and Danny Lopez (ProdServ) for the "HIGHLANDERS"; and, Eugene Silva and Bhoy Siscar, both from (Mkti OPSIM) for the "SUMMIT QUEST". The Tailman/ Sweeper was Mike Salalila (QCID).

Upon arrival at the campsite, the trainees were treated to a scenic view of the surrounding mountains and towns southwest of Mt. Makiling. After some rest, the group proceeded to the water source, a natural mineral spring flowing on two small waterfalls. After meal preparation, dinner and the "Socials", lights were out at around 10 o'clock in the evening.

The night at Mt. Makiling was windy and very cold. The following day, Day 2, wake-up call came at 5:30 A.M. After a filling breakfast, the PLDT Mountaineers proceeded their ascent to the summit.

The first clearing , known as "MMS Deck", was reached by the group after only 40 minutes from the campsite. Hiking through the forest line and conquering several elevations, the goal of the climb, "MELKATS Ridge", was reached. To get to the ridge, the trainees had their taste of Rock Scrambling and Rope Climbing. Resting on a large rock, hanging from the side of the mountain, at around 3,366 feet above sea level, both the trainees and the core members savored the feel of being on top of everything.

Clearly displayed is the exhilaration and satisfaction on the faces of the climbers. For all the hardships and risks involved, it was well worth it. Definitely a tougher peak to conquer on the next climb, which will well suit the enthusiasm, strength and vigor that was exhibited by the "Pioneer Batch" of the PLDT Mountaineering Club.
