Some Edge Activities
We cater for a range of tastes, some activities will seem adventurous or perhaps involving stenuous exercise, whilst others require just the ability to sit on a seat and drink beer.
To find out more on some of these activities, please see the section on the newsletters accordingly, but note that some of the activities mentioned were before newsletters came into existence!
If you want to do things that aren't listed here, no problem! Ideas are welcome and if you want to go hill walking, mountain biking or yak farming it is all possible with enough support as we are covered under the umbrella of the Scout Association's insurance policy.
It is intended in future to put photographs on this page to illustrate that we really do these kind of things!!! When of course we obtain everyones approval to have their faces announced to the world.
Fun
Chambers Pot Quiz
The Venture Scouts were no match for our superior intellect and we defeated them hands down! As our prize we won the big pot and will be running next years competition.
Christmas Meal
The Christmas meal is a tradition that was carried over from the time when we were Venture Scouts. In those days we used to go the effort of cooking food ourselves, but as we got older we realised that this was hard work and that it was easier to go to a resturant! Much banter is swapped and many pressies are awarded at Uggi's traditional speech.
Treasure Hunt
Together with the rest of a Fellowship we found out how badly Uggi drives, how incapable Rav is at map reading and in general how poor we all were at solving Daphne's cryptic clues. Despite coming last we had a jolly good time and the pub grub was good too!
Pub Crawl
A very successful, if not memorable evening (well not after the beer anyway). We are all over 18 there are no legal problems for us with this activity and it was widely enjoyed..
Bowling
The bowling was a challenge against our local Fellowship rivals Stevenage. Sadly they beat us, but we have also bowled just for fun as we are not far from excellent facilities!!
Dinner Dance
A representative contigent from the Edge attended the annual District dinner dance and throughly enjoyed themselves into the bargin!
Aquasplash
A new event this one, but enjoyed by all who intended, even though the Chairman got submerged at the end of the "space bowl" water shoot run.. Our resident stunt man was of course sent down the rides first to test their safety!!
Service
It is probably important to stress that we do the service becuase it is enjoyable. It is not all work at all, we often have plenty of time to sip a beer or swap gossip.
Canoe Trek
We successfully catered for a small army of canoeing Scouts and Venture Scouts for their lunch stop in the middle of a grassy bank by one of Hertfordshires many rivers.
Harmergreen Service Camp
We try and help out at Harmergreen, our local camp site at least once a year. We usually set up Saturday morning, work on the site in the afternoon, have a BBQ and a few beers in the evening. We recommence work Sunday morning and go home in the afternoon. The service crew we did in 1998 put posts in near the road, fixed the fence, cleared up some fire wood and cleared the gravel (several tonnes) off the drive entrance. In 1999 with the help from our friends in "Goblin" VSU we laid a large patio, removed a tree stump and fixed another fence.
More recently "Uggi" has been installing electric lights to be run of solar power in the loos, water tap and washing up area.
Hertford Heath Hut Improvements
We cleared the evil blackberry bushes away from the hut, repainted the windows and re-creosoted the front of the hut. We also installed some barriers to help drivers over the mini-bridge.
British Legion Competition
This year we are actually running the competition so that we will get the attendance up from the previous two dismal years.
The Gathering
Believe it or not this is actually service. True the odd beer was drunk, but we helped make sure that things didn't get out of control. We also provided a female first aider and went round in pairs on the monopoly run catching teams and offering chance cards around London. Finally we helped out with the running of the activities on the Sunday morning.
The Night Hike
Members of "The Edge" helped run the site, with car parking, checking in and general site set up, clear up and management.
Mission Impossible
Recently we helped out at this Cub night hike by feeding about 100 cubs and leaders soup and hot dogs from the kitchen in Tolmers. We were so good it looks like we are going to be booked again by Hertfordshire Cubs.
Watton-at-Stone Scout Practice Camp
Following a request from a local Scout leader we helped out introduce some Scouts who had never camped before to the joys of camping. We helped them with their tents, taught them how not to do lashings, how to light fires, how to cook successfully with a camp fire oven (yes it really worked), gave them a wide game and scanked their food!
That troop are now so throughly impressed with camping that they all want to go camping, do things on their own and the troop is undergrowing significant growth!
Camps
We have been on summer camps around the country and have been on the odd weekend camp as well. We basically try and take it easy where we can, but the more adventurous people can also be catered for. This summer some of our members are supporting the District camp to Lochearnhead in Scotland, doing walking and other less stressful (or more stressful as we have to cater for over 100) activities!
