Upmanyu

The second disciple of Aayod Dhaumya was Upmanu. Gurudev asked him to take the cattle out for grazing in the forest everyday. Upmanyu used to remain with the cattle in the forest for the whole of the day & then come back with the cattle to Ashram in the evening. Seeing the healthy body of Upmanyu, Gurudev asked him:

"Son! What do you eat everyday?"

"Gurudev! I eat whatever I get in the alms (bheeksha) from the villagers."

"This is unrighteous. You should never eat such food without first offering to the Guru."

Next day onwards Upmanyu used to leave the cattle for grazing in the forests, then collect alms from the village folks & surrender everything at the feet of Gurudev. Gurudev used to keep everything with himself without giving anything to Upmanyu. Seeing Upmanyu healthy & hearty as before even after that, Gurudev asked Upmanyu the reason for that & then Upmanyu replied:

"Gurudev! I surrender the alms collected in the first round at thy feet. Then I eat from the offerings collected from the villagers in the second round."

Gurudev: "Collecting alms two times from the villagers is the violation of their rights. This is unrighteous."

Upmanyu obediently accepted this command of Gurudev also. After a few days Gurudev again asked Upmanyu as to how he was making his living. Upmanyu said: "O Lord! I drink the milk of the cows."

Gurudev: "This is against the religion. Drinking the milk of the cows belonging to the Guru is a theft. Do not ever do that."

When Upmanyu appeared healthy even after he stopped drinking milk, then Gurudev again asked Upmanyu the reason for that. Upmanyu said: "When the calves drink the milk of the cow, then a few bubbles of the milk is left. I lick that & feel satisfied."

Gurudev: "Son! Seeing this, the calves must be staying hungry & leaving more milk for you. This is not expected of you."

Now all sources of food were closed for Upmanyu. But his faith & respect for Gurudev was as strong as before. He kept on doing the work assigned by Gurudev with full enthusiazm. Sometimes when he used to feel very hungry, then he used to chew some leaves of the trees & plants.

Out of irresistible hunger, once Upmanyu ate some poisonous leaves & lost his eyes. He could not find his way back & fell in a well.

Gurudev, who acted harsh for the benefit & betterment of the disciple, but who was very soft & tender in heart, when he saw the cattle returning without Upmanyu, then he went to the jungle to search for Upmanyu. The sound of "Upmanyu... ! Upmamayu... !" started echoing in the forest.

[ O Upmanyu! You are blessed! Whom, thousands of devotees call at the time of their prayers, that Gurudev is calling you! Great is your service to the Guru!]

When Upmanyu heard his name being called by Gurudev, then he immediately replied from the well. When Gurudev came near the well he came to know of what had happened. He told Upmanyu to pray to the doctors of the Devtas, the Ashwini Kumara. The Ashwini Kumara appeared soon & as medicine gave Upmanyu some sweet to eat. Upmanyu said: "Now I cannot eat anything without getting the command of Gurudev."

Ashwini Kumara: "This is medicine. There is nothing wrong to take this. Once even your Guru was in a similar situation & he himself had eaten."

Upmanyu said very politely: "I will not see what my Gurudev used to do. I want to become as he wants me to be."

Ashwini Kumara felt very happy. They cured the eyes of Upmanyu. Upmanyu came out of the well & narrated the complete incident to Gurudev and fell at the feet of Gurudev. Gurudev's heart was overwhelmed with blessings & these words came out of his mouth:

"Son! You shall have the complete knowledge of Vedanta and you shall be very religious minded & great scholar."

It so happened also. Salutations millions & millions of times at the feet of such great Brahmaveta Satguru who may appear harsh from outside but His heart is always filled with divine love & blessings for the disciple. Salutations to such disciple who did not hesitate to do Guru Seva even at times of harsh circumstances, and who could digest the spiritual & divine nectar given to him by Satguru & attain Self-Raelization!
