SUMC History

Springfield United Methodist Church was nothing more than a thought in the Fall of 1953. Then on December 6th, a meeting was held for anyone interested in organizing a Methodist Church. Thirteen residents attended along with representatives from the sponsoring church. Five weeks later Rev. George W. Harrison was appointed minister by Bishop Paul Neff Garber. Thirty-three adults and twenty-five children attended the first service held in Garfield School on January 17, 1954. The congregation continued to grow as more and more people attended.

After breaking ground for the new building on February 6, 1955, construction proceeded rapidly and the sanctuary-social hall, fourteen classrooms and offices were completed in October of 1955.

The Church continued to grow so rapidly that a new sanctuary with a seating capacity of 700 and many additional rooms were completed on April 24, 1960. This gave Springfield United Methodist Church the room to expand even more. Many ministers have served the Church since January 1954 and have added their own specials touches.

Boy Scouting has been very active in the Springfield Methodist Church for almost the life of the church. When Boy Scouting first started all the units were under the sponsorship of the Commission on Education and remained under such sponsorship until 1963 at which time it was turned over to the Methodist Men, and has remained under their sponsorship to the present time.

Boy Scout Troop 856 was organized in January, 1955 under the guidance of CHARLES G. EMMETT with thirty (30) boys, meeting in the Garfield Elementary School.
